Title: What's the best way to kill Hantavirus?
Post by: Geezer on 17/07/2010 06:37:09
My neighbour has problems with mice in his garage. Hantavirus is known here.

What's the best way to clean up his garage? Would a mild solution of bleach be an effective way of cleaning up without risking infection?

Chlorine bleach pretty much kills everything it touches. Best is to spray it all over, whilst wearing a respirator. Make sure you get every place the mice have run, including the roof rafters ( thus the respirator, as most have goggles as well, a plain mask will not do) and all of the walls and floor, especially corners. Ventilate well the next day to get the odour out after leaving the bleach to dwell.

Note this will bleach pretty much any fabric or plastic there, as well as smell pretty bad where it hits the mouse urine.

Remember afterwards to seal all rodent holes, and leave some wax poison blocks in a pipe inside ( or buy a Tomcat pest indicator box) where other pets are unable to reach them, to control the problem in futrure.
