Title: Hidden cures?
Post by: diegostation on 05/10/2005 08:56:39
I've heard many times that pharmaceuticals try to hide cures for some diseases (especially virus infections) so they can continue to gain profit from the treatments of those diseases... Maybe one of you have heard of it or has something to day to validate my point.

I cannot say how pharmaceutical companies prioritise their research, but I doubt very much that they would actually hide cures, simply because they would not need to.  The distance between finding a suspected medical effect and developing a safe cure involves such a huge amount of money that, while they may well choose not to invest that money into bridging that distance, they also don't need to hide anything because until the research has been done (and vast sums of money spent) you cannot speak of a cure as such.

It is the nature of the way we do medicine that we expect pharmaceutical companies to spend very large amounts of money proving their products are safe and effective.  If they are not going to make a profit out of that investment, then how can they afford to make the investment.  If we want things done differently, then we have to look at a different funding model for drug development.
