I'm sad. We had to have Comet put to sleep this evening.
When we got to the stables this morning he was still laying down. I thought straight away that something was wrong as normally he's at his door as soon as he hears us.
A few minutes after we got there he tried to stand but couldn't. His legs just buckled as he tried to push himself up. We tried coaxing him to no avail and after a while decided it was a case for the vet.
When the vet checked Comet out, he said he suspected a twisted gut. He gave us 3 options - surgery, large dose of anti-inflammatory painkiller just on the offchance it was something else, or have him put to sleep. The vet was pretty sure it was a twisted gut, though, so really the painkiller was a clutch at straws.
I have to say here that Comet has lost a lot of weight again over the last week. We had assumed that was due to us putting him on a restricted diet because of his laminitis.
By mid-afternoon Comet still hadn't managed to stand up. He'd tried a few more times, but it was obviously causing his stress that he couldn't manage it. We called the vet back & asked for his recommendation. He said that he didn't think Comet would survive surgery and that possibly even transporting him to the hospital could be too much for him.
As a last chance we got him to take a blood sample before we made a final decision. A couple of hours later the vet phoned us with some very bad news. The blood was full of toxins and the vet said that was because Comet's liver had stopped working and now his whole body was shutting down. Because of the weight loss, the vet was pretty certain that Comet had liver cancer.
There's nothing that can be done for equine liver cancer so we had to make the decision to have him put to sleep. Both Sandra & I had been reluctant to make that decision until w knew that everything possible had been done. When the vet said cancer, that made our minds up for us. We have clear consciences now because we know it was the right thing to do.
It's such a shame because he was a lovely little horse - friendly, cheeky, and great for the kids to ride. We'd already spent months getting him into condition as he'd been neglected before we got him. At least we know that his last 6 months of life were happy.

It is a sad time, but you know that you gave him all you could. No doubt the kids will be sad to hear the news.

It is a terrible thing to go through - I had a dog who got a poisoned anti-freeze "treat" from a very horrible neighbor.
Putting her down was about as hard as it gets. I know how you feel and you have my deepest sympathies.

Thanks, everyone.
Went to have a look at a lovely black horse today. He'd make a good companion for Tango. We're thinking about it.

We're not getting the black 1. He's not been trained at all yet and, to be honest, we don't really have the time to devote to doing it.

So you are looking for a companion who will already be trained... That makes sense to find your time for both horses! and The family and work!

Well just with your studies and works on autism alone seems like a very demanding daunting job!
