Maybe the sugar content is good for the plant
-
Perhaps you should do the experiemnt and find out what happens with other drinks.
BTW, did you get the tulips from Amsterdam?
-
Ermm.. Neil I wouldn't recommend the Coke so much.. If we leave a tooth in a glass of coke overnight.. It has massive effects [:P]

Perhaps this is why you think of Max Bygrave with Tulips!
Beautiful Tulips... I would guess that it is the sugar content in the lemonaide that would add to their longevity but I am not sure!
They are very pretty!..
Here is what the florists say at this site:
http://www.britinfo.net/florists/cut-flowers.htm
Supplied in easy-to-use sachets, floral food contains three additives which work together to nourish flowers and deter bacteria:
* sugars to feed the blooms and encourage buds to form.
* biocides that kill the bacteria, yeasts and fungi.
* acidifiers to help water move up the stem more easily.
Bouquets and arrangements are normally delivered with sufficient flower food to last throughout their likely life span.
There are myths around about adding substances, such as lemonade, aspirin or bleach to the water? Lemonade or sugar help flowers to open, but also encourage bacteria to breed. Bleach is more likely to kill the flowers than help them. Other myths include coins and aspirin, which do nothing.

...Formaldehyde could work well too. [:P]
-
Really? I wonder what it would do? Have you ever done that in an effort to preserve the flowers?
-
How about just sugar water. Would that work better?
-
(I was just being silly) ;)
-
well that seems more plausible... Lo I had never heard of formaldihde...used like that... 3ealy though what would happen to flowes set in it? serioudly someone with some should try it!

Heehee.. Ermm.. I have also heard that spraying the flower with a weed killer also makes them grow faster [;D]
