Title: WHO is YOUR favorite AUTHOR and WHY?
Post by: Karen W. on 04/02/2007 04:58:19
Well I have several, But John Steinbeck and Zane Grey had to be on top of my list. I love many different authors and books. Children's book would be Eric Carle " The very Hungry Caterpillar"
Also miscelaneous poets.. Yates, Keats, Thoreau, most of the romantics..

Without a doubt, John Irving. For me his works are poetic in the way they blend the line between comedy and tragedy. No other author has been able to make me laugh and cry at the same time. I completely believe that his works are going to be one day studied. It is probably a great honour to be cast in with the likes of Tolkien, Margaret Atwood, and Toni Morrison (all excellent in their own right). I completely suggest that everyone go out and pick up any of his novels, they are all worth the time  [:)]

Yes, he is nice!  I love me some James Robert Waller!  He is awesome!  He is also brilliant...his fiction is actually a recount of a personal event in his life...

John O'Donohue simply because his work speaks to me on another level. I find his work inspirational and can relate to most of the things he writes about

I agree with John Steinbeck. The grapes of wrath was amazing, and of mice and men was just a good read. I read some Henry James a while back, very good. I've not read anything worthy in a while I'm afraid. my favourite authors for in-the-bath reads are Kathy Reichs, James Patterson and Ian Rankin. for science, it'll be the standard Richard Dawkins, but I've also got 'mutants' by Armand Marie Leroi on the go.

I like travel writing when I'm in the mood, read some of Bill Bryson, and Tony Hawkes. light, amusing but interesting.

any recommendations for authors I might like based on the above?

Who is henry James? What does he write.. I have never heard his name before, or were you refering to Henry David Thoreau?

I read Henry James' 'The turn of the screw' when I was at school, and I've read at least one other that i can't remember, he wrote ghost stories basically. I always intended to search out more, and perhaps I'll do that sometime soon.

I have to say that I do not read enough novels to have a favourite author.

As a yoof I did read the James Herbert horror novels. (The Rats, The Fog, The Lair, Fluke)...also...The Amityville  Horror book was probably one of the most disturbing books I read...I was probably too young !!...and of course I would read it at 3am !!...nowadays..I hardly read at all...though I do enjoy facts and figures...encyclopedias and  stuff like that.

....and yet....ten yeasr ago I read Hard Times by Dickens....excellent !!!
