Title: What is never-nude syndrome?
Post by: MDriver1981 on 12/02/2009 05:05:51
Some people are unable to remove all of their clothing in the presence of other people, or, for some, even when they are alone. It is a condition called “never nude,” and it often leaves its sufferers unable to function in even the most basic situations. So why isn’t this debilitating psychosis recognized by psychiatry’s most influential reference, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - Fourth Edition (DSM-IV)?  We should start an international petition to get this painful sickness realized.

Why have I never heard about this?
And what sort of name is 'never nude' they could have called it Demistnudeitelasm or something.

Well, it is a serious illness, affecting many people around the world. There are two members of the German Bundestag who are Never-Nudes and are very open about it.

Chief medical reporter, Dr. Steve Udell, takes a look at never nude syndrome, in this continuing series on underreported diseases for The O.P.’s News You Can Use.

Never Nude Syndrome
AFFECTS: dozens worldwide
SYMPTOMS: include the inability to be completely nude and an unhealthy attachment to denim cutoffs

Never nude syndrome has not yet been recognized by the DSM-IV.

They are unable to remove all of their clothing in the presence of other people, or, for some, even when they are alone.

Tobias Fünke, a self-proclaimed actor and former chief resident of psychiatry at Mass General, just happens to be a sufferer fighting for recognition of this increasingly common condition. According to Fünke, there are dozens of sufferers, including two members of the German parliament.

Although it is a psychological condition, never nude may be influenced by genetics. Fünke’s nephew, George Michael, was recently seen at the Living Classic Pageant attempting to portray the nude Adam in a recreation of Michaelangelo’s Creation of Adam—albeit sporting denim cutoffs, a telltale sign of the condition.

But those afflicted by this condition need not worry; most go on to live long and healthy lives. And with the support of their loved ones, Fünke says, some may eventually learn to overcome their fears.

Most everything I read so far was about a tv sitcom Tobias... about this syndrome that is really not even recognized as such as I see it....

It says the actor was "Tobias Fünke, a self-proclaimed actor and former chief resident of psychiatry at Mass General, just happens to be a sufferer fighting for recognition of this increasingly common condition."

I have yet to see real proof of such a condition.. can you show me something else?

This is the real condition that the show bases their syndrome on...

Gymnophobia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gymnophobia

Gymnophobia is a fear (phobia) of nudity. Gymnophobics experience anxiety from nudity, even if they realize their fear is irrational. They may worry about seeing others naked or being seen naked, or both. Their fear may stem from a general anxiety about sexuality, from a fear that they are physically inferior, or from a fear that their nakedness leaves them exposed and unprotected.[1] The word "Gymnophobia" is derived from the Greek "gymnos" (naked) and "phobos" (fear).

Standards of modesty (also called demureness or reticence) generally prevent public nudity. Avoidance of nudity in private situations may be a continuation of modesty, or may extend to prudishness or body shame. Only an actual fear of nudity qualifies as gymnophobia. Only when the fear is beyond one's control or is interfering with daily life can an anxiety disorder diagnosis be made.[2]

[edit] In popular culture

In the television show Arrested Development, the characters of Tobias Fünke and Philip Lit suffer from gymnophobia. In the world of the show, they are referred to as "never nudes", and they wear cut-off denim shorts at all times to avoid being completely naked.

Karen, I want you to do something.  I want you to go outside your house and run around the streets completly naked.  Run with your hands stretched out.

Dude I have given birth to three children and strip in the summer and shower outside in the nude a lot.. if weather permits...That doesn't mean I want to stand naked in front of the city! LOL But quite frankly when I am home I am buck naked cause I like the freedom of it!

MDriver1982: I would be interested to know if you have felt like this all your life or whether you can ever remember it not being an issue, for example, as an infant, pre-teen child or adolescent?  Is it something to which you think you can attribute a cause or is it something that seems totally irrational to you too?

The world is full of irrational behaviour.  In fact, all people seem to be irrational in some respect, at least all the people I've ever met, and I know for sure that I'm not always rational either.
