Title: Could there be an UP or Down to the universe ?
Post by: neilep on 31/01/2007 17:54:44
Is it impossible for us to know if there is an UP or Down in the universe because we are inside it ?

If there was a way to somehow get a complete picture in three dimensions of the shape of the universe would it then be possible to assign compass type directions that would be apt to everything in it ?

If we see Australia as "down under", that is simply because by convention we place the North up on our maps and globes.  The ancients had the North on the bottom side of their maps (probably because to Greeks and Romans the sun passes over the South and never over the North).  I do not know when that has been changed or why.
It is because the ancient Greek maps were upside down (to us) that they saw the river Nile ending in a delta (Δ).
"Clockwise" is also that way around because the clocks copied the apparent movement of the sun in the Northern hemisphere.  If clocks had been invented in Australia or Terra Del Fuego, they might very well have turned the other way around.

Thank you Eric..I see your point.

So, all we need do is discover the shape of the Universe...contact every living organism in it and ratify a compass orientated direction thingy....shouldn't be a problem !  [;)]

how about an inside or an outside?

OUCH !!.........would the outside of our Universe be the inside of something else...which also has an outside and then........ooooooooooohhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!....... [???] [???] [???] [???] [???] [???]

This question has long attracted me. It’s as if I can sense an answer even though I can not preserve it. This outside is also inside. It’s a state without demission or time capable of a creative thought that then becomes everything in its perception. I think the nothingness of space for between protons right up to the stars is all part of this state and we all and all other matter are no more then a brief manifestation its  awareness. Nothing created by this awareness is permanent because it can only exist by trough a possess of creative change. (Like say the way the certain parts of the visual system can only see movement) It requires change to exist.

yea i know it does not make any sense  [^]

This is similar to a question you asked earlier because the main thing that creates an up or a down is rotation although a non spherical shape could also be a possibility and that is being investigated in current cosmic microwave background work.  As for an inside and an outside we can infer parts of the universe that are and will always be outside of our regions of observation and can observe other parts (black holes ) that we are outside of.  and I personally favour the possibility that our universe is effectively inside a black hole in another universe  and so on without limit.
