why does nicolaus copernicus theory on the solar system not accepted today???

I understand that Copernicus believed that the orbits of the planets to be circular and although the sun was approximatly in the centre of the Solar system it could not be regarded as truly stationary.
When Kepler's realisation that the orbits were eliptical and that the sun was much more massive than the total mass of the planets this gave a much better explanation of the dynamics of the solar system
