Title: How will the world end?
Post by: Joe L. Ogan on 23/08/2010 19:20:45
How will the world end?  I would just like to hear the current thinking about how the world will end.  Thanks for comments.  Joe L. Ogan

Do you mean the end of the world as a planet, or the end of the human race? I assume you mean the former?

To all intents and purposes, the Earth will end when Sol runs out of fuel and expands outwards, to about the diameter of the Earth's orbit, while it passes through the red giant stage of stellar evolution.

And for those of us who do not speak fluent astronomy?  [:)]

I think a pole shift will happen, a true shift where the equator ends up running across what we now know as the Arctic and Antarctic.

Why on Earth do you think that this will happen?  What could cause it to occur?  The amount of energy required to tilt the Earth over to such a degree would render the Earth inhabitable at the very least, and could even result in the Earth's disintegration.

Ahhh thank you  [:)]

Actually it is not my own valid theory, but I saw a documentary on pole shifting a while back, really quite interesting. Cataclysmic pole shift was put up as a possible but unlikely theory due to the amount of pseudoscientific interest is has attracted. *Apparently the poles having been shifting slightly anyway, so it is more likely the poles will undergo a partial or full end-to-end flip as opposed to a quarter-flip.

*denotes this was what the scientist chap was saying.

By the way I don't fully believe this, it was posted up with a little humour and for something different.  [:)]

This will happens in million of years. If the human race is still alive at this point we will probably live on another planet in another galaxy...

You may be confusing magnetic poles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pole_reversal) with geographic poles.

Possibly! True pole wander is a different theory to geomagnetic reversal, however both were covered in the documentary.
At least my post was a  little less dry.

I'm going with zombie apocalypse.  It was already reported by the BBC. (http://web.archive.org/web/20050428004220/http://65.127.124.62/south_asia/4483241.stm.htm)  And that's certainly not a fake news article.  No sir.

At the current rate of progress, mankind might fart itself out of existence [:I], should the "Clathrate Gun Hypothesis" be correct [:0]...

Polar shift (rather than magnetic pole reversal) is unlikely as the earth is in effect a giant gyroscope.
However the axis wobbles in a cyclic fashion which Milankovitch observed as a major driver of climate change (on a geological timescale).  Two of the four Milankovitch cycles relate tot he earths axis (Axial tilt and Axial precession)

World as we know it after 13.75 billion years.
What was the evolutionary duration from its prime accretion beginning.
Geological proof of extinct life forms, and their world's end, as we might know it as it was.
Present day wonders of earlier man's engineering accomplishments and what was lost by evolution, in a puzzle form.
Speculation of man's future self distruction.
Possibility of history repeating itself, related to the mass extinction of the earliest roaming life forms.
Estimated half life of the Sun's existence as we recognize it, as a Red Giant Sterilizing any near by worlds of the solar system.

A combination of events will continue to eat away at this environment until Mother Nature will have the toughtest time recovering, effecting and crippling our existence.
The strong bodied may survive, the intelligent forms of weaker bodied may parish and the combo of the two will prevail in a very small population.
The smart strong, trying to convince, the weak minded strong, will be a crucial turning point to man's distruction.

Self Extinction!!
This will be the point that will deny man kind from experiencing, the most spectacular show on all 4 corners of the earth.

I believe it is all in the process, a gradual decent to Well, in a hand basket.

If man plans not to be extinct, then bottle our best DNA or the receipt, the plans on how to duplicate the DNA and explain the best Chromosome makeup, not to create a mass murderering, melodramatic, greedy, psycho.
Send it to the far off reaches in many directions of the Universe, like a cluster bomb.
But do not forget to reinforce the written, the audio/video of morals that was ignored and the expense paid, that caused it all, just before man's triumphal exit.

World as we know it after 13.75 billion years.[...]

Umm... You're thinking of the Universe there; the 'world' i.e. our Earth, is only ~4 billion years old.
