Title: Why is my Urine dark kinda orange red colored and strong odored?
Post by: Karen W. on 04/11/2007 19:09:22
Well I know that normally a healthy urine is clearish with only slight color if any and mild as far odor is concerned.

The last few days despite my liqiud intake my Urine has changed to a darker orange red color,..one might even say brown with orange red tone..and is very strong odor and is extremely difficult to produce.

One would compare the chore to being very constipated except that it is difficult to push the urine out! Upon trying to urinate I find I really feel like my bladder is full to the point it hurts in the back and in the front areas where one normally feels that urge to go.....like on a long ride when you have held it as long as you posssibly can and if you don't go you feel you will burst! Never have had to struggle to release urine Before.

I go in to the doctor Tuesday to discuss the problem... but what are a few things that can do this to your Urine?

BTW todays was some lighter and had a touch more yellow then this last week but still way off.

I have a lower back ache that seems to not want to go away either.both sides above either side of the spine jusy above the waiste!

I'm no expert but it could be a kidney infection. A round of antibiotics and rest and you should be good to go.

There can be lots of reasons for this Karen, not least of which what you eat. E.g. beetroot can strongly colour your urine and eating aspargus - I'm sure you know the smell if ever you've eaten them.

You might have an infection but usually that is accompanied by other symptoms also e.g. pain (stinging or burning) on passing urine, constant feeling of needing to pass urine, difficulty starting to pass urine, fever, generally feeling unwell, nauseous to mention some of the main ones.

There could also be blood present in the urine to make it redish - which of course would not be good news.

I'd avise you to check with your doctor, especially since it's been a few days

The hospital called and I talked to the Doctor in charge of my tests he said my kidneys were not working right! He has presribed some tablets for a 12 hours  amd four hours before my ct scan.. and then he said we will discuss it further then. They have to use Iodine dye in the ct scan of the Aorta,He said The iodine is too hard on the kidneys and mine would fail so he wants to make sure they don't! I was just wondering if that was related to the color and smell of my urine.. I am assuming yes.

I don't eat beets and very rarely asparagus, but do know the smell.. this is way different!

Thanks though.. I sure hope this is something treatable.. I am getting really nervous as they just keep finding more things to  throw at me... I am starting to want to never go back to the Doctors again... He said.. I just don't know how we missed this before!...

It is just frustrating.. I'll know more on Tues. In the mean time I am drinking lots of water and thinking cranberry juice, but I hate it so much I don't know if I can drink it! LOL

Hi Karen, sounds like you might have an infection and require more antibiotics. As a safety precaution drink cranberry juice to flush out the bacterium from your bladder. You may also need to be checked for stone formation this can be done with ultrasound.

I have posted some previous experience with urin changes using IBT that you may find helpful, but it definately sounds like you have something else going on there and should get it checked out asap.

I wrote this a while back : What should happen when I tilt my bed?

Instantly, your circulation will increase, your metabolism will also increase, generating additional heat. Heart rate will drop by 10-12 beats per minute, and respiration by 4-5 breaths per minute. You should feel more relaxed and notice that your spine is in gentle traction during the night the following weeks you should begin to feel able to breathe more easily, more relaxed, and have more energy within the first 4 weeks. Urine density, clarity and odour will also change within a few weeks, and body temperature significantly warmer.

Seriously, dear Karen,

I don't want to interfere with your docs,
but please tell them exactly what you wrote here:
back pain, little reddish and smelly urine, swollen
legs for fluid retention and high blood pressure.
They might decide to delay aortic iodine
investigations and treat your kidneys first.
You may actually measure your daily urine volume,
record it with the approx. amount of your daily
drinks and show them those data asap.

I would argue not to change consumption of cranberry (or grapefruit) juice without checking with your doctor, since both can effect blood clotting activity, and the doctors will want to manage that along with your blood clotting problems.

Knew about grapefruit causing damage to kidneys but didn’t realise cranberry juice was an anticoagulant. As George suggests better to ask your doctor if cranberry is ok first. Just done a quick search using anticoagulant and cranberry to see if there is an interaction going on and there are mentions of interactions suspected when using cranberry and warfarin

Thanks Guys.. I will tell the doctor and try to measure for the next day or so!
I WILL GO SEE IF I STILL HAVE A HAT IN THE BARN FOR CATCHING URINE AND MEASURING IT. I HAD TO DO THAT WITH ME MOM BEFORE SHE PASSED!

Glad your urine output is sorting itself out finally, had to type this in here because people reading this thread might fear the worst if it ends on your last post Karen.

Its probably just me Karen dotting the eyes and crossing the T's but felt that the thread was ending on a low point when your urine output was fortunately improving, so dropped a note on to let people reading this thread that you were bouncing back rather than deteriorating more.

No Problem.. I posted the new photos of a bit less swollen tootsies in the other thread today. They feel better. Left foot swollen again tonight, but I was stuck in the car awhile and couldn't get up and move about for quite awhile today!

To avoid thie swelling from the car seat, use an extra cushion to raise you up so that your knees are lower than your bottom.

Thank you for posting the pictures and for updating us on your progress
