Title: Could we step outside the Universe to see its centre?
Post by: Sarah Gibbons on 11/09/2008 10:35:01
Sarah Gibbons asked the Naked Scientists:

Is there a middle to the universe? I said no or it is ever changing due to the ever change expansion of the universe, but my father says if you could get outside the universe you could see where the middle is, and that where the Big Bang happened would be the original middle.

Which one of us is right?

thanks.

The short answer is that you can't get outside the universe - space and time are part of the universe, and you exist in space and time.  It could be argued that the BB occurred 'outside' the universe.
