If you take a sphere and stand inside could you not say that the entire universe is contained within the surface area of that sphere as you look around the inside?

Yes but it is a pretty large sphere!

This sounds like the story of the three men who were given the task to engineer the fence that contained the biggest area.
Can't remember what the first two guys did, but the third guy wrapped a fence tightly around himself and declared himself outside of the fence, therefore the entire surface of the Earth apart from the ground he stood on was "inside" it.

and the skin of the sphere would be made of 2 physical dimensions whereas the interior of the sphere would be made of 3 physical dimensions

Reminds me of the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.
