I must be going through a phase of despondancy as I seem to be thinking about cataclysmic events !!
...when in 5-6 billion years (perhaps September that year..[:)])...The sun will start to become a red giant and then will eventually become a white dwarf yes ?...well..how long will that process take ?...could we planet hop to Mars for a few millennia ? before quitting the solar system...or will this process happen (relatively) very quickly ?
Please answer ASAP as it will effect my holiday planning...many thanks.

Einstien said that time is relative,if thats the case who the hell is my sister, how is she a relative?
ah ha got it! she has been there all the TIME !!!!
so your sun expanding is a brotherly or sisterly act,wow im more logical than spock !

Neil so your thinking of taking up my offer of 2 weeks in my martian condo. Don't worry its safe and you will be long dead before the sun decides to consumes it anyway. As of yet i have no idea how i'm gonna get you back but that a minor,(any suggestions anybody) I'll sort it. Promise [:)]

The good news: the sun moving to the red giant phase is a slow process.
The bad news: Earth will only be habitable for about another billion years, not five.
In another billion years any inhabitants of earth will be well done/crispy because of the Sun's expansion by that stage, e.g. the oceans would have evaporated by that stage.
At five billion years the Earth will be a cinder: the sun will almost engulf the earth by that stage.

couldnt we wrap the earth in one of those silver suits that vulcanologists wear,we got a billion years to make one big enough.[:D]
RE-HAB IS FOR QUITTERS.

Robert how about we hang about in space cities on the periphery for the odd few billion years and when the sun becomes a white dwarf we make a Dyson Sphere ? http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Dyson+sphere

Reflective foil aside, the Earth's albedo does influence surface temperature.
Long before the Sun starts getting very much warmer, we will have to face the fact that the Antarctic continent will shift away from the south pole, and will cause all that ice to melt (this is even without any issue regarding greenhouse gases, or changes in solar output), and this will reduce the Earth's albedo, and so cause a rise in the Earth's surface temperature.
Now, if we could cover the Earth in a reflective surface, that would help reduce the surface temperature. Ofcourse, covering the Earth with anything that reflects sunlight will also reduce the amount of photosynthesis on the planet, which might increase the level of greenhouse gas.

i think long before our sun cooks us,a large piece of rock many miles across will probably end it all,we have got to head out into deep space to save our species.
its our nature to explore,so it seems the logical step, the challenge is enormous, ships big enough to support breeding colonies, and strong enough to make the journey.
looking at the last few hundred years,it will be a doddle for the scientific community.[8D]

We could always carry the water elsewhere in a giant gourd ;)
And dump it on Zybroth V (Yes, I made it up :)) And live there happily ever after... Until Zybroth V's sun eats us :O
