Cambridge science festival is great,
http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/sciencefestival/

Pete Wothers lectures are incredible in the amount of work that has gone into them - not that I am jealous..

I also do various lectures as part of the festival both for the naked scientists and CHaOS (Cambridge Hands on Sceince)

If you want something a bit sooner have a look at other science festivals, or science centres. I haven't seen any of their shows but the centre for life is very well run, and they keep winning the best demo competition at the British Intereactive Group Event (not quite conference).

Is that any use?

The Royal Gunpowder Mills in Waltham Abbey (Essex) has some amazing crazy science stuff going on this summer. A couple of friends and I went with our children (all aged between 3 and 12) and not one got bored! There was plenty to keep them all entertained, they particularly loved the rocket car races and the Mad Scientist in his Lab - the people in there are pretty crazy which the kids loved! Lots of fun demonstrations! The science shows were excellent - particularly for the older kids (and me included)! We went on Monday and my kids are all still talking about it and are nagging me to go again! So thought I'd pass the word on as I know it can sometimes be difficult to find something different to do in the school holidays.

Hi daveshorts,

Thanks for that - is it child friendly?

I know this was a bit cheeky but I posted the question just so I could comment on the Summer Fun stuff going on at the Royal Gunpowder Mills. They have quite obviously put so much effort into the activities and shows, and it really was one of the best days out we've had in a long time, but it was just so quiet - obviously great for our day out but I would hate to see the place stop what they are doing because of low visitor numbers! So if anyone is looking for something to do with the kids over the summer holidays I can highly recommend it!

Cambridge Science Festival is very child friendly there are a huge number of things happening on the two main saturdays, which are designed around children

The only issue with the Cambridge Science Festival is that it is somewhat successful. I am involved with an event called Crash Bang Squelch (http://www.srcf.ucam.org/chaos/cbs) which is full from about 20mins after it opens at 10am, and we start issuing timed entry tickets, but I think they were all gone by about 11:30 this year, so get there early...

The queues for the Naked Scientists talk were scary!!

Try INTECH in Winchester. The planetarium is brilliant.
