I have a cold starting, and one of the symptoms i have is a sore throat. What causes this and why does it feel sore and swollen?
-
Usually it is my sinuses that run down my throat that are the culprit. If I can keep my sinuses from draining down my throat,I can avoid the sore throat.. I immediately take a antihistamine when I feel even a tad sore. I take it until the running subsides, it also prevents the constant cough from sinus drip!

Take a flashlight and look at the back of your throat in a mirror.
If you see red or white patches, then it's probably strep throat.
If it is a strep infection you may need antibiotics.
other symptoms include
-Sore throat
-Red and white patches in the throat
-Difficulty swallowing
-Tender or swollen glands (lymph nodes) in the neck
-Red and enlarged tonsils
-Headache
-Lower stomach pain
-Fever
-General discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling
-Loss of appetite and nausea
-Rash
