Can anyone tell me what touches you about any music you like? If it's song - rather than just a track - it's obvious that the lyrics can touch or move you if you can relate to them. But what was it about the music - ok, maybe with the words - that moved you?
And what about, say, Mahler, who so many find exhilarating & I just find a noise!!

With me ..I find music extremely emotive. It's usually the emotion it conjures up inside me that does the trick. I ususally get far more emotional and touched by music without lyrics than with as I find that with the right piece my own state of mind takes over. There are just some simply beautiful pieces that are so poetic in their arrangement that it's diffficult to not be moved when I hear them.
I think one needs to be passionate about music in the first place to be touched by it .though I can see that there are different levels at which one can be moved....For me.......it's my sanctuary...always has...it's my escape and from an early age of learning piano and being brought up in a music loving family to my 8 years in owning two specialist audio stores and getting to play with loads of high end audio equipment I guess I can see I am bitten by the musical bug.
There are moods of all sorts conveyed in music that in others.....they fail to see.....John Miles put it oh so right when he said ..."music was my first love"....and it was !

I am the epitome of the true tin ear. I can not carry a tune in a bucket. Hearing lyrics is sometimes drowned by my tin ear and the overtone of the music. I am not an avid intellect of authors or musicians relative to each style of music or songs. I do remember the certain ones I feel that I can associate with in time and place. Years later someone will tell me the correct lyrics in that song that I had admired and poof the glass is shattered.
This happened a few times, which gave a good laugh at my expense, funny yes it was. So I get my smiles that way too, and it is all related to music.
I still can hear and feel the beat with the recognition of specific timing that hits several varieties of my emotions throughout the orchestration. Sometimes hearing the same music being presented on a different instrument has a different affect. "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys, if a piano was used instead of an organ, it my not have had the same affect on me.
Yes moods, "music soothes the savage beast", it also revs them up.
Look the display of emotions during the "British Invasion" in the early 60's, and concerts later blessed or cursed. Either was the icon affect dominated and their music was secondary.
I remember the Ed Sullavan Show, Broads Casted, (little Girlies bantering and plumeding), all over the place. Even though it may have been staged with extras in the audience, the cascading affect was tremendous.
Music moves like a double edged sword, you hear every strike definitely.
