Title: Why Is urine Yellow ?
Post by: neilep on 19/02/2008 00:52:31
Dear Weeologists,

I just do not feel the need to post a piccy here as evey day we can view our own if we wish !...........us blokes don't really have a choice unless we don't care where we aim !!

So, to the question in hand !.....why is wee-wee yellow ?...why not blue or green ?..where does the yellow come from ?...I don't drink yellow coloured drinks ?

If I were to drink lots and lots of water will my wee-wee colour dilute ?...and why is morning wee wee so strong in colour ?...are all animals wee-wee yellow ?

On behalf of me, myself and I........WEE thank ewe !! [::)]

lol lol.. kIDNEY PROBLEMS PRODUCE A ORANGER RED COLOR WEE.

NOW I HAVE PRODUCED A MORE GREEN IN COLOR WEE BUT KNOW NOT WHY..

The stronger morning urine is concentrated because it has had little if any water throughout the night, and I thought I heard it was the vitamins from the breaking down of food.. that caused that color.. but I am not sure!

The yellow colour is due to the pigment urochrome... which is one of the breakdown products of Red blood cells. All the time we are breaking down red blood cells in the liver and spleen (and making new in the bone marrow). The body removes the excess via the kidneys, so we excrete it in the urine (urea is colourless) You see this pigment in bruises too.... as the body breaks down the blood in the bruise it goes greenish and yellowish before vanishing!

"If I were to drink lots and lots of water will my wee-wee colour dilute ?"
Yes- an effect quite often noticed by beer drinkers because the other (coloured) stuff in the beer is destroyed by metabolism or not absorbed from the gut in the first place.

...and why is morning wee wee so strong in colour ?
Because the body changes the way the kidneys act slightly during the night; they excrete less water so you don't have to keep getting up to go to the loo, but the production of urochrome etc is still going on so the urine produced overnight is more concentrated.

...are all animals wee-wee yellow ?
I don't know but I would expect so. A lot of chemicals have electronicly excited states that lie just far enough above the ground state to absorb blue/violet light. It's quite likely that some of these chemicals will occur in the animal's urine. In short there seem to be a lot of yellow chemicals- more so than m ny other colour (except white which hardly counts).
