Title: Are herbal teas good for you ?
Post by: Tronix on 25/02/2005 02:55:01
Hiya fellow scientists. Anyone have any formal proof of the beneficial effects of herbal tonics, teas, and drinks, or could point me to some clincal test results? I have used herbs before and it has seemed to work. Anybody else use herbs? thanks

I'd ask ylide, the chemist formerly known as Cannabinoid, about herb use !

Off the top of my head, the only documented benefits of herbal teas (green teas especially) is due to their containing high levels of antioxidants, which can aid in preventing heart disease and cancer.  There is probably research that I am not aware of but that's the big one.  Some other herbs have minor effects like stress reduction or bowel regulation but I don't believe much of that is truly researched and documented.

There's the nutritional benefit, too....many herbal teas give us our minerals and trace elements that we wouldn't normally get in the quantities we require in the typical American or British diet.

Herbal medicine is in the folklore category. That means some of it is true, and some of it is untrue, but none of it is scientific. If you like to use herbals, be aware that some herbs are quite powerful and do have serious effects on your body. As an example, my mother gave me an herbal oil for constipation as a child. It was quite effective. The oil was made from the bean of the castor plant, which contains ricin, an incredibly potent toxin.

An herb from the foxglove plant was widely used for chest pains years ago. We now know it as the heart medicine digitalis. The list goes on and on. Herbs can be very powerful medicine, and must be used with care. Also, do not mix herbs with other medications, as side effects can be deadly.

As I understand it, castor oil does not contain ricin. The process of producing the oil from the seeds gets rid of the toxin.

Herbs are plants. Some plants contain things that are healthy for us, and others contain things that are not. Asking whether herbs are good for you is like asking whether pills are good for you -- it depends on what's in them, and the state of your own health.
