Title: What kind of mixture is a Bloody Mary?
Post by: thedoc on 05/02/2015 03:30:02
John Gamel asked the Naked Scientists:

The Bloody Mary has long been my favorite breakfast beverage, but my intimate knowledge of chemistry deserted me long ago, so here is my question: is the Bloody Mary a solution, a suspension, an emulsion, or a combination of the above?

What do you think?

I believe it is a suspension of solids in a solution. Alcohol, citric acid and sugar all dissolve completely in water at the concentrations found in a bloody mary, the tomato juice is a complex mixture of various biological compounds dissolved or suspended in water, and tomato pulp, which is suspended. Also any of the spices added will be suspended.
