Title: Does peanut butter require refrigeration?
Post by: Simulated on 17/06/2008 23:57:38
I'd like to know beacuse its really nice to put on your bread once you first open it, then we put it in the refigerator and it gets all hard to spread and breaks my bread :( ha. It'd be nice if I could just put it in the pantryy thingy.

Thanks

Sim I keep my peanut butter in a  kitchen cupboard, I would never put that in my fridge as it is not the right consistency but
why don't you do an experiment and see one day if you keep it
in the fridge and then the following one in a cupboard??

Or get two jars and put one in the fridge and one in the cupboard.

I had never thought of putting it in the fridge before, along with the oranges and crisps.

I have always put it in the cupboard. Can imagine it cold and non spreadable in the fridge.. I have refrigerated it on celery sticks covered in plastic wrap.. I like it room temperature.

I would say yes I have never had trouble with it out. My jar does not say refrigerate after opening either and that is a law to include on the container so I say go for it don't worry.. Just watch its age as the oil can get rancid!

Skippy does recommend refrigeration after opening...but it's so smooth it can handle it !!...and that's because it has slightly less peanuts as a percentage than some others.

According to http://www.peanutbutterlovers.com/howmade/index.html , nope it doesn't need refrigeration.  Even peanut butters that recommend it don't need it.  We just finished off a jar of Skippy and it never went in the fridge.

Hmmm...perhaps we have stricter regs about the quantities of ingredients that must be displayed...I am puzzled that they do not say the quantities on yours !

There's a conspiracy thoery about peanut butter, tomato sauce and other things such as this that say on the label "refridgerate after opening" that the only reason they say that is because if you keep it in your fridge, you will see it more often than in the cupboard, so you might eat more of it, then buy more of it. None of this stuff said refridgerate after opening years ago and the product hasn't changed.

Nor does any of the Peanut Butter jars that I have had or used
ever said to Refrigerate it.

Turnipsock's advice was good, sensible as he is. IMO

I have to see that it is and has ever only been that USA brand Skippy that says to refrigerate:

Here again are the details:

Karen it's a little tricky to ' digest ' the ingredients on yours are you able to take the piccy again....tip: turn the flash off and take photo under strong light using the 'close up ' feature....else...do what I did ...peel the label off and scan it !!

Though, I have to say...the idea that a conspiracy theory is dwelling inside my refrigerator is exciting !!
