A friend and I have recently been arguing over the idea that Crystal Light causes a chemical reaction when it is mixed with water.
I have constantly said that the color change is associated only with the dye being held in solution with the water.
She says that she would expect the dye to then fall out of solution at some point if it were only a physical change. Her grief is with the fact that she left a bottle of crystal light on the counter for well over a week, and didn't notice that any of the drink mix had 'sunk' to the bottom.
I personally am convinced that this is obviously only a physical change to the solution, but I'd like to hear from anyone who has an opinion on the matter.

The dye is in solution, but unlike salt or sugar dissolved in water it can be seen.
Would your friend expect that over time a salt or sugar solution would end up with the salt or sugar on the bottom?

A solution won't settle at the bottom. A suspension will.
