Title: JUST IN ASTROIDS A NWE A GROWING THREAT!!!!!

I saw a special on national geographic that an astroid found in the astroid belt surronding our solar system could be directed at us. The problem is that we have NO defence against such a thing!

Yep....t'is a real prob indeed !!....waking up to find that an asteroid has destroyed the planet can really ruin your day !

Didn't you check the filed plans? It was a scheduled demolition to make way for a new interplanetary bypass [:D]

Well, think of the poor little asteroid!  It's likely to be worse off than the earth after such a collision.  lol.

The title of this topic is incorrect.  The threat from asteroid impact is no different it's just that we are becoming more aware of it.

The really scary thing is that calculations of predicted future near misses are no guarantee.  If the comet or asteroid encounters another object out there somewhere and is slightly deflected via impact or gravity then instead of near miss we might have it coming straight at us. This is not as improbable as some might think since most kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud objects trajectories are unknown.

The problem of comets coming in on hyperbolic trajectories and (like a fighter pilot) coming 'out of the sun' is much greater. Within a couple of decades we shall have a very good fix not only on all the potential asteroid threats, but the skeleton of processes to deal with them. The same is not true for the random cometary visitors coming in from deep space, then vanishing forever (unless they hit the Earth).

[As an example of synchronicty, as I began to type this the film Meteor began on my TV.]

Observe; collate; conjecture; analyse; hypothesise; test; validate; theorise. Repeat until complete.
