Title: Why do we get bags under our eyes?

Hi Chris.

Love the show, listen on the podcast (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/) every week. I listened to last weeks show (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/) at work today. I have a very vague answer to the question of the week about why we get dark cirles under our eyes when tired. If you and your experts can elaborate that would be great!! I think its something to do with a chemical that gets released when we are wake and stood upright, the natural pull of gravity makes that chemical release and move down causing the dark circles? Very vague I know! Having said that, I have dark circles under my eyes all the time even when I have l slept for a long time and I know many other people do. So I don't think it's just when we are tired, there must be other reasons. Maybe another reason could be that the skin under the eyes is so delicate and I image the blood vessels are tiny and sometimes may leak from the capillaries, it could be the the body's reaction to try and clean up the small amount of leaking blood that causes the dark cicrles? Abit like a bruise I suppose. I will be interested to hear the answer on Sunday!

Many Thanks

Louise Allen
