In case I missed it last time - a dead kitten. It was so unusual and out of the ordinary it made a lasting impression - as did the backhand blow my mother gave me as I reached down to touch it.

I was still the only child at that time so I must have been about a year and a half.

I expect nothing more - the lesser amongst the unwashed rabble always try to do violence to those above them in station.

I remember my friend taking all my sweets and then denying it, cuddling the rabbits in the back garden, my brothers digging a really big hole in the back garden as they thought they could get to Australia and hiding behind my Mums legs when she was talking to the local undertaker who was a very large and scary man.
I don't know which was the earliest memory as I didn't have any concept of time before the age of four.
Have you read "Miss Smitters feeling for Snow?" (not sure if that is the right spelling of her name.) But it has a really good explination of how we see time.

I had pneumonia at the age of 1 1/2 years and I remember it vividly. But even before that, and I'm not sure exactly how old I was at the time, I remember having this thought:

Ohhh No! Not again.........!

And that's the truth, believe it or not.

I remember my brother being carried from the back of my dads black VW beetle in a carry-cot thing when he was a baby, but as he's only 15 months younger than me, and they got rid of that car not that long after he was born, I must have been pretty young!

I find this absolutely amazing!  I too can remember my thoughts at an early age even before others could understand my baby gibberish.

The thing about memory and recall is that it is almost entirely unreliable.

Not entirely unreliable, but we do generate lots of false memories to fill in the gaps, so although certain bits of a memory may be absolutely real, other bits may not be! It's difficult to disentangle the real from the not real.

The memory of my brother and the black VW Beetle seems to have been real - they got rid of it when I was very young, so I couldn't have transposed a later memory on to an earlier event. However, I also have lots of early memories where I'm apparently looking down on myself, which is frankly odd, and I wonder if I'm actually remembering looking at a photo of myself.

I can remember the morning after my first brother had been born some 50+ years ago, having been woken up by my Dad and asked/told to go to see my new (then) baby brother.

I made a right fuss then I was 2 and 1/2. Didn't want to know about him that morning. Now we're close.
Also the pet dog we had was sick all over the bedroom floor.

tch, tch, tch.....  yourself

That is what was believed in the 1650's, Turtle Boy. It wasn't until 1840 that NZ became part of the B.E.

Not entirely unreliable,

The memory of my brother and the black VW Beetle seems to have been real

And the memory of my pneumonia is also quite real as my parents will testify. What stands out in my memory is the terrible taste I had in my mouth as a result of the infection. Also, I remember looking at the wall paper design in my room and the hanging toys in my crib. I asked my Mother about this in later years and she was astonished that I was able to describe them both in detail.

Oh no, Jim did his homework. If he hadn't done it I could have given him lines or slapped his leg and given him red marks.
One of my earliest memory is of a teacher slapping my leg so hard that I wet myself. BITCH!
