OK OK Alright already. I'm here, but have been very busy. Had a new grandchild, and she's gorgeous, but then, I do have a biased opinion. Mama of the baby had surgery today -- nothing serious, just a ganglion removal on the left wrist. I started Spanish lessons, and estoy apriendiendo, and have started writing another book.
But you guys are great. It's nice to be missed, and I'll try to come on line more often.

Nancy,
What are the details of the first book. I must have been in hiding when the first one was mentioned. Maybe we could take a look at it?

Muchas gracias y mi nieta es preciosa. Nieta -- isn't that a cute word for granddaughter?
The first book, which took all of two weeks to write, I haven't mentioned on the forum. It's based on my last relationship with a lawyer, which was bizarre, and with a tad of exaggeration, it's comical. It's sort of a chick book, though. The new one I'm writing with Donnah. She's a great editor, and I love writing with her. Nice when you're compatible with your co-writer. It'll be another chick book and no, not a romance type. It's about a weak woman who strengthens up -- cause she has to. I'd have to get Donnah's permission before I reveal any more of that. As for the first one, the bulk of my time has been spent researching the law to see whether or not I have the characters disguised well enough to try to get published. Would hate to get lucky with a publisher, and then get sued.

Have you thought about publishing an abridged version on the naked scientists articles section ? There is an "on the lighter side" area, intended to provide a respite from hard science. Might give you some good exposure, no play on Naked intended !

That's a thought, Chris, and thanks for the offer. I'll have to consider how to abridge it. Certainly no science in it--just pure entertainment. Hey, at my age, I'll take all the exposure I can get!

This is an early draft of the first page or so of the book (yes it's copyrighted). Nancy created the opening, which I love. We are having a blast with it and honest critique is welcome.
“Mother always told me to be careful who you breed with. Breed with--like I’m an animal or something. Dr. Schendal, do I look like an animal to you?”
Dr. Schendal raised a bushy eyebrow.
“How could a woman be so cold to her own child, her own flesh and blood?” Charlotte argued. Dr. Schendal took a breath and his lips parted, but Charlotte was on a roll. “Apparently I didn’t breed well. Lord knows Gordie hasn’t been much help. He knocks me up and before Misty ‘s twelfth birthday he ‘discovers himself’. The lilly-livered faggot even had the nerve to bring his boyfriend into our bed! The very bed that Misty was conceived in. Ugh, I wanted to retch when I saw them together. Disgusting! Unnatural! Not to mention just plain gross. Not a woman. Oh no, not Gordie. It had to be a man. How the hell can I compete with another man? My hands were tied. What choice did I have? With Misty only twelve years old I was powerless, at his mercy. Just my luck I had to catch the bastard and he left! Took off with his boyfriend” she said, letting her wrist go limp, “and to this day is still living with that ass, pardon the pun.
Some great private investigator David is. Busting people for infidelity is his bread and butter and the dumb ass gets caught himself! What kind of person comes into your home and sleeps with your husband in your own bed? They could have at least gone to a hotel or something. It’s almost like they wanted to get caught, just to give him an excuse to leave. What do you think?”
Dr. Schendal cleared his throat but Charlotte resumed her verbal tirade.
“Never mind. It doesn’t matter whether or not it was on purpose. The end result is still the same. I’m here all alone trying to raise this fifteen year old monster who has no conscience, and no one is helping me. You’d think at a time like this your parents might help out, but then again, it’s my fault, right? I didn’t breed well. How was I supposed to know he was bisexual? OK, so I knew he wasn’t the most masculine man I’d ever met, but bi? How can you tell? And Mom just sits back with her moneybag husband, and watches us struggle to get by on child support and my peanut-paying job. No wonder I’ve blossomed into an elephant.” she said, sweeping her hands from head to toe over her chubby body. “We’re her bloodline, but she just doesn’t care. What kind of cold, heartless person could do that to her own daughter and granddaughter? Says she wants a rest. A rest! Do I get any rest looking after Misty? Don’t you think she has a duty to take care of us?”
“Good question.” Dr. Schendal managed to interject. “Whose responsibility is it to take care of you now? You said your mother reared you, paid for your college education, and has arranged your sessions with me. Do you think she’s entitled to a rest?”
“A rest? That’s a good one. She’s retired, she can rest all day. Nobody forces her to work with that lost children’s group, she doesn’t even get paid. She doesn’t have to get paid, she’s got Mr. Moneybags to look after her bills. If she wants to work that badly why doesn’t she get a real job, one that pays, and donate her paycheque to her own child’s cause?”
“Who is responsible for taking care of you and Misty now Charlotte?”
“Oh, me, of course, I’m responsible for Misty being such a rebellious little sh*t, for me having a crappy low paying job, for the fact that my father died when I was thirteen, for Gordie being gay, and while we’re at it I must be responsible for the hurricanes off the east coast too. You sound just like my mother,” Charlotte crossed her arms and slumped in her chair. “That’s right. I’m sure it’s all my fault.”
“Charlotte,” Dr. Schendal said softly, “the purpose of my comments is not to affix blame. In the twenty or so weeks you’ve been seeing me, I’ve heard a diatribe of complaints about how messed up your life is. Your problems won’t go away by themselves. It’s going to take some work on your part to solve them. Then too, there’s the issue of Misty. How much school is she skipping?”
“What do you want me to do? Am I supposed to physically carry her through the front doors? Follow her to every class? It’s not my fault she won’t go sometimes.”
Dr. Schendal sighed. Charlotte was a tough case. Her denial was fierce and she drew strength from being a victim. He genuinely wanted to bring her to the revelation that her own actions and choices had brought her to this place in life. He knew that if she didn’t learn to take responsibility for herself the negative cycle would most likely continue in her child’s life. Charlotte couldn’t teach Misty what she refused to learn herself.
