Dearest Bods of Clever Intoxicating Answering Fonts Of Information !
If I was stranded , floating in space within our galaxy and the only stars I could see were the distant pin-pricks of light , would I be able to see my hand in front of my face ?...I need to know whether I should pack a torch or some matches !!.....
I am assuming that the gaps between galaxies would be totally black !!..or am I wrong ?
Brighten up this weary space traveller before Auto-route plots the trip for me ! [:D]

It would be about as dark as on the earth on a very clear moonless night, so not as dark as a cave, but pretty dark all the same.
In the gaps between galaxies it would be darker, but you could still see the galaxies so still not totally black. In fact why the sky is dark is quite interesting, as if you look far enough in any direction you will see radiation from the big bang, if this hadn't been red-shifted by the expansion of the universe the sky would be a fiery (at least) ultra violet. However it has been red shifted so far that it is now in the microwave part of the spectrum.

I'll take a torch and a box of matches just in case.
It stands to reason then that if the Universe was collapsing then the sky would be getting brighter eh ?

Not if the light was shifted an equal amount the opposite way.

Take a hot water bottle as well Neilep, interstellar space is approximately minus 260 degrees (Celcius).

Dear neilep;
The universe is full of light, but most of is not visable untill it hits something. so if you spacesuit is reflective yes you would beable to see your hand.

This is total nonsense. Except in the case of fluoresence/phosphoresence, light is light and equally visible before and after being reflected (still interacts the same with your retina). The light shining on your space suit will be scattered so spread over its whole surface rather than the pinpricks of distant stars but there won't be any more light visible.
Clearly, light will scatter of your hands without having to go via the spacesuit... although if you're holding the palm of your hand up to your face it will be in the shadow of your head and only reflected light will shine on it.

Flouresence/ phosphoresence or light soure inof themselfs/
The light from a star is only visable
[1] looking directly looking at the [ strate into the retina]
[2] or by it reflecting of something.
Now if you can see light as goese by you from a source as a star or a light bub before is reflected of something., you have better eyes that any person or man made photo detector.

I wouldn't pack matches unless you have a good oxygen supply. But not too good. Could get painful.
I can picture in my mind a world without hate, a world without war.
And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

Good and interesting question. I thought this issue some years ago and i notice one interesting observation. I have made net-book where i have present some od that my ideas but unfortunately it is Finnish-language. Maybe i some day translate it english.
I try to explain that my observation and backrounds of it and short conclusions of it.
I was a fishing and laying near camp-fire. I look light-area round of fire. I start to walk and light-area ends about some distance of fire. My fire was near to lake and i walk other side of lake. And what i see? Fire-color, clear. I look it binocle and i see it much better.
Something comes to my eye.
I made coupple questions on my self.
What i see?
How my eyes-brain-mind work?
Why and how i see nature near fire but not far-away?
Why and how i see fire far-away?
Then i get idea.
Colour and light is different "thing".
Light travell shorter distance and decrease it "seeing-power" quite easily and it spread non-form-type.
Color travell longer distance and keep it's form-type much better and easily.
But at long distances color-forms transforms to round-ball. Like if we see many planets like one. Or if we mirror square-mirror sung-light we can see that far-away square is not any more square, it is circle.
So i thought more and get next idea.
Light and colors has different speed. Also different colors has different speed.
I think that color-particles can flow much mor faster than we suppose light-photons motion be.
Same observation can notice at car-light. Seeing light-area is near car but we can see car-light color-point at long distance of car.
So, can you see between some galaxies, it depend of that how near nearest light-source is at your standing point.
Earth we have distance 150 000 000km to sun and we are in see-light-area. I suppose that example pluto-ball is also in that area. But if we travell longer then dist-point that light-area ends but still color-particles flow longer distance and sun can see quite far-away longer that see-light-area exist.
Hmm. Maybe i draw this at my "new ideas of physics" document some day so it is much easier to understand what i mean. My english is not hmm. how i say, home-language. Terms-translation is difficult to do, because it mix mind somehow little bit.
Example english word, home.
English "home" means Finnish "koti".
Finnish "home" means English "mildew".

I was thinking that light is both like a wave and like a particle. Particles don't need medium to travel through, would particles travel better when there's nothing for them to interact with. Is light is like that, too. Would light travels faster in a vacuum than through any material?

I continue this issue little bit.
I thought that light or all that stuff which we called light which coming example,lamp, sun, etc. is some kind of small matter particle stuff. Smaller than todays knowing atom part size. Alto i think that this light-stuff is so kind matter that it has next properties. It is see through kind (invisible), also it's mass is very light. And it start to flow easily from light-source. But, when i look object i dont see light, i see colors of object. Therefore if i want to see object then must have light between me and object then object own color can come to my eyes. So, do object send light or colors particles? Or do object send these particles without light-matter? And and or are these colors particles what kind matter form type?
Example dark room.
I dont see anything without light. All room objects is still in that room. I can touch it, i can smell it, drop, hear, but dont see. I switch on light and then i see all things, paintings, flowers, furnitures, etc. and i see these things colors.
I think that all what we see is some kind of many different matter-particle motion, which size is smaller than todays knowing atompartsize is?
