Woolworths have sold nearly all their stock in break neck speed at small discounts by saying they are going out of business. Do you think that at the eleventh hour they will come up with a solution to keep the shops open, restocking and laughing all the way to the bank?

I know the Woolworths in Australia are about to change their logo.. maybe it's a worldwide change and they are getting ready for the new colours etc.

My local Woolworths is selling off the fittings (shelves etc.) as well as the stock. They will only sell those at well below cost price. If it's a con they are going to lose a lot of money.

Yes, Woolies is definitely going out of business from 27th December 08 and onwards.

Wollies went out of business here in the US in the 1980's (where it was started, by the way, as F. W. Woolworth Company by Frank Winfield Woolworth in 1878 in Utica New York, USA)
It is now a sporting goods store here in the US called Foot Locker. I guess that Wal-Mart has run them out of business over-seas now.

Provided that you don't mind going to South Africa, you can stil shop at woolworths.

It's a totally different shop (to me when I saw it it seemed more like Marks + Spencer).

It's a totally different shop (to me when I saw it it seemed more like Marks + Spencer).

You just have to feel sorry for the shoplifters. Apparently this time of year is very important and Woolworths closing down has hit them hard. And then there's the inevitable knock on effect with police not having to visit the Woolworth Stores inevitably means there are more of them looking for motoring offences. But it's still sad and the Woolies near to me closes on 27th December that's Saturday and that's a rotten Xmas present for all the 30,000 staff.
Also now another UK tea company's gone out of business and has been bought up by an equity company. Whittards of Chelsea and no not Bill Clinton's daughter but a place in S. London.

The clothing chain Officer's Club went into administration and out again on the same day.

Lets hope they manage to listen to what people want from shops, rather than selling tack no one wants. Hope a buyer can be found.

No, Andrew sorry but Woolworths stores have not been saved and my local Woolies store closes for ever tomorrow.
Sad for the staff and community too.

Woolworth is still alive in Germany, different company, though. They had financial trouble too and changed owners several times. The stores are very similar to the English ones.
We've Foot Locker shops here too, BTW.

Woolworths? Now theres a name I haven't heard in a while, in NZ, they went bust 3-4 years ago... now they're working with Countdown, or Foodtown, can't remember anyway. One thing that I don't get, if you are going to go broke, why do you still print your advertisments in colour (I mean the ones in the papers, not the billboards etc...)???

Perhaps printing adverts in black and white would alert people to the fact your company is struggling?

Well, perhaps, but you know Pak'n'Save? (You have them in South Africa don't you?) They print their ads with three colours: yellow, white and black, and its very effective, (they're certainly not struggling... I think [::)], but if they are, I certainly can't see any signs) and they do it on normal newspaper, which reminds me that Woolworths used to print their ads on fine glossy and smooth paper that doesn't even burn that well when you put it in the fireplace [:D] [:D]! Which just creates more trouble when trying to get rid of them...

Well Woolworths in the UK has gone out of business and all of the stores will have closed for good on 5th Jan 09. For EVER

The Woolworth's that I remember as a youth disappeared when they went over to selling cheap, gaudy pre-packed stuff, videos, and crappy stationery. In the '50s and '60s they had big, deep counters full of stuff that was loose and piled high. A source of great amusement was to set the mousetraps on the top of the heap and wait for someone to mindlessly run their hand over them - who can resist doing that to heaps of stuff?
I feel for those who have lost jobs from the closure but the store became superfluous long ago - too many others were doing the same thing. Som eof the ethos of the early Woolies is can be found in Wilkinson's if you are fortunate to have one near you.

Went to Woolies for the last time the other day. Murray got an office chair from the cafe office for £10 and Fred bought a shopping basket as a souvineer. There was nothing left in the pick and nick so we took a bag with no sweeties in it instead. One small boy asked his Mum if it was OK to nick stuff as the shop had that feel about it.
