Title: Can You ID This Crystal?
Post by: ScientificSorcerer on 13/02/2014 09:50:26
I Am looking A Specific crystal which has "Piezoelectric properties" The crystal is see through, like glass and it is reasonably strong. What crystal is this.

I need help finding this kind crystal for a science experiment.

I looked on the wiki and found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piezoelectricity
Scroll down about half way and you'll find a list of materials, some of which might be potentially good for my application. but I'm no geologist, I need help.

What I'm trying to do is make a speaker which is like a plate of glass, the details are complicated, but all I need is a clear piezoelectric crystal to make the plate out of.

This gadget may work on an existing window ...
[ DIY wired version  (http://www.mindsetsonline.co.uk/Catalogue/ProductDetail/loudspeaker-kit?productID=33357455-51a2-480c-a125-0e968ff2770d&catalogueLevelItemID=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000) ]

Piezoelectric transducers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Electronic_component_piezo.jpg) may also work, rather than electromagnetic.

Quartz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quartz#Piezoelectricity) has been used for many years for its piezoelectric properties.
Single crystals are quite clear. It is a very hard mineral, and difficult to cut into a large flat plate.

The amount of deformation it provides is not great, so it won't be a thunderous sound.
You also need clear electrodes - like Indium Tin Oxide (or someday, maybe Graphene).

Quite a lot of piezoelectric materials are transparent.
There's a list here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piezoelectricity
and you can easily check on which ones let light through.
Growing single crystals of some of them may be very difficult.
