Title: Watching time... rewind.
Post by: Mystericon on 01/03/2006 19:20:59
Last night I was layed in bed and started thinking about the speed of light.

I then thought what it would be like to see things rewind...

I came up with this theory: If we were to find a planet with life on, and were to focus an attached telescope on a designated point, on a spaceship capable of traveling faster that light. If we were to fly the ship away from the planet faster than the speed of light, we would infact see time reversing itself. Time would not actually reverse, but it would seem like it was, get it.

If this could be done which I SERIOUSLY doubt is possible, it would help in solving crimes, or settling disputes... I realise there are many problems with this and I'd love your opinions on it. Thanks [:)]

Dear Mystericon;

  A telescope collects the incoming light from the planet that you are looking at and if you are moving awawy it at a speed faster than light the light the telecope is collecting can not keekup with it.

Yes Yes I know that... I'm saying in theory it's entirely possible. Don't you think?

You could at least give a reason for your disbelief couldn't you?

Mystericon,
didn't you used to appear in Captain Scarlet?  (Oh dear, I am showing my age now, aren't I.)

Anyway, yes, you're right - you would see everything apparently moving backward in time.

Major Ed is right that no new beam of light would ever be able to catch up with you.  But what your telescope could pick up would be earlier beams of light that left the planet before you did.  So if you were travelling at 2c, say, then after 1 day you'd be seeing light that left the planet 2 days ago (i.e. that left a full day before you left), and after a year of travelling you'd see a scene that was 2 years out of date (i.e. from 1 year before you left).

But first you'd have to get over the minor problem that you could never ever accelerate to the speed of light, never mind exceed it. (According to relativity theory, that is.)

Perhaps you'd be better sticking to ideas with more practical applications in your nocturnal wonderings.

It was but a humble daydream. Ah well... [:)]

Aren't there already enough repeats on TV ?...

Mystericon, you just keep on thinking those thoughts, it's a great work out for your mind. The good thing is your showing ingenuity with your thought process...keep on day/night dreaming those ideas.

Solvay_1927 is right, I had one of those times that my mind just stoped at the fact that he was outrunning the NEW light. Sorry.
