This is the trade-name for alendronate, a bisphosphonate that inhibits bone resorption. Alendronate is used as a "bone protectant" in individuals at risk of pathological fractures or metabolic bone diseases including osteoporosis, steroid use and in Paget's disease.

What are the side effects of alendronate?
Bruce is on the waiting list for a hip replacement (a 1.5 year wait) and has some necrotic bone in the hip joint. Would Fosamax help him (or anything else)? He has a lot of pain and can hardly walk some days.

A serious complication with alendronate is oesophageal ulceration if the drug is not taken properly.
The instructions are very specific and dictate taking in the upright position, without food, and not lying down for 30 minutes afterwards.
It is not an agent that can help people with arthritis. It tackles metabolic bone disease and has a role in the prevention of fractures amongst the at-risk population (elderly, osteoporotic)

Thanks Chris. Can you suggest anything else that might help? I noticed that the flesh in that area of his hip is frequently cold. I've been massaging in the hopes of improving circulation, but quite frankly I'm at a loss for what to try next.

If it wouldn't help to use it for the necrosis, could it hurt? Assuming, of course, that he stays upright for half an hour after eating.
