Title: The Power Of A Sneeze !
Post by: neilep on 15/11/2006 03:30:00
Dearest (OUCH) Academic Friendly Types Whom Place Me In Humble Mode All Too Often,

Thanks to the trials and tribulations that is a torn ligament in my side caused by a sneeze has at least given me the impetus for this question !

How powerful is a sneeze ?..what speed does the air/snot/gunge nasal joy get expelled ?

What kind of pressure build up is there ?....do they really absolutely need to be so violent ?

If...just IF for instance someone was made to sneeze and all the cavities were sealed (for the duration of the sneeze)...would there be irreparable damage done to the individual.?......broken ribs ?..spleen ?...head explode  ?  ....etc..

THANKS  (OUCH..it hurts !!) Neil

Neil - I sneezed so unexpectantly tonight that I popped my back.  I kinda liked it.  Saved me a trip to the chiropractor. [;D]

Powerful enough to launch certain air borne viruses.

My personal example of sneeze power:  I was eating a piece of raisin pie and in an failed attempt to completely swallow before the sneeze, I launched a raisin up around the bend and down and out.  Now that hurt, although it appeared to cause no damage.

"The travel velocity of a sneeze can be as much as 100 mph?! For this reason, children and adults are all being taught to sneeze into the inner bend of their arm at the elbow, rather than into their hands, or worse yet, directly into the air near other people!"
This is a quote from the net and it rings true from our Health department and my last Health and prevention two weeks or so ago!
Others report Velocity of 145 to 165 KM/H.. Not sure in miles per hour what that would be...I am no good on conversions!

THANKS MAM..

There's 1.6km to the mile so the latter figure of 165kph is also about 100 mph.

Thank you for the sneezy tip

OH..you might find this site helpful...there's a lot out there that do the same http://convert.french-property.co.uk/

Its funny, Sneezing and coughing use muscles we are not used to using and so it is like overexcercising and you feel the burn afterwards and during... Yuck it hurts to be sore like that.. I hear ya! Sorry you were so sick, doesn't sound lke allergies!
