Title: What is the best treatment for canker sores?
Post by: Tigerkix on 26/09/2009 08:26:30
I have been getting cankers sore all through my life and i get lots of it... and i have never been fond of it... surprise..
So lately I've been doing some research on canker sores. From what I've learned it could be from a lack of vitamin b12. So I went and bought myself some Vitamin B12 pills and taking them. And it has helped a little bit. Also its one of the symptoms of hay fever, which i have but thats only for 2 months a year. I get canker sores year round. Does anyone know and remedies or ways to prevent canker sores?

Try dabbing fresh cut lime and juice directly onto the mouth sore, stings for s few seconds then the pain should go away.

As usual wikipedia has a page ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphthous_ulcer

This stuff (http://www.bonjela.co.uk/) may be worth trying for symptomatic relief, (at least it won't sting like the lime).

Antihistamine is the standard treatment for hayfever ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayfever#Allergic_treatment

I don't know what causes your canker sores but I do know what causes mine. I started having them when I was 18 and at age 60 I still have them although less frequent and less severe.

What causes my canker sores is small injuries to the gums or tongue, particularly injuries caused by eating crunchy, salty food. The salt sometimes makes a very small injury. A canker sore forms as my immune system overreacts to the injury. There is inflammation in the canker sores and if I have a bad sore or sores, my entire body reacts and I am badly fatigued.

Prevention involves avoiding crunchy, salty foods and keeping my mouth moist if I do eat any crunchy or salty food.

Treatment of canker sores is by using Kenalog in Orabase, http://www.medicinenet.com/triamcinolone-dental/article.htm . Have your doctor write the prescription for generic as it is much cheaper and just as effective.

If I apply the Kenalog within a few hours after the canker sore starts, it will heal in 12 to 24 hours. Apply the gel about three times per day until healed.

If I wait 8 or more hours to apply Kenalog, my immune system cranks up and it often takes days for the sore to heal while making 2 or 3 applications of the Kenalog daily.

As I have aged, canker sores have become less of a problem. My doctor said my "immune system has adapted and does not get as excited about the tiny injuries as it did in its youth." Still, I occasionally have them and keep Kenalog handy for quick treatment.

Best of luck.

One solution on how to get rid of a canker sore that many have found effective is switching toothpaste brands. Most toothpaste products today contain sodium lauryl sulphate, the compound responsible for all those frothy bubbles whenever you brush your teeth. However, it’s a strong surfactant and is actually also used in floor cleaners and engine degreasers, so it could cause canker sores on sensitive gums.Canker sores may also sprout from nutritional or vitamin deficiencies, making it more important that you’re on a healthy diet. The vitamins and minerals that are discovered to trigger canker sores if you lack them are zinc, iron, folic acid, calcium, selenium, vitamin B1, B2, B6 and B12. Have a blood test done or consult a doctor to right away to help you on how to get rid of a canker sore.

Hydrogen peroxide is a good remedy. Mix 1 part HP with 2 parts water and use like you would mouthwash. Swish around in your mouth for a minute or two then spit out. Do this 2 times daily for about 3-4 days. You will see improvement and less pain.

Some people suggest washing one's mount with salt water.

I generally put some granular salt (1/4 tsp, or so) directly on the lesion (between lip and teeth).  Hold it in place until the salt is absorbed.

Repeat a couple of times a day.

It will sting like crazy for a few seconds, then the pain will go away, and you'll just be left with a salty flavor.  The lesion will generally resolve itself in 1-2 days.

Sage is a herb that has been found very effective for canker sores treatment (http://www.crazyhealthplan.com/home-remedies-for-canker-sores/). The calming and soothing properties possessed by sage provide immediate relief in inflammation and pain.

Take 3 teaspoons of sage leaves.
Add it to a cup of steaming water.
Wait for 15 minutes.
When this solution cools, strain it and rinse your mouth with it.
Do this 3 times in a day.

I realise this is old but it's still very wrong.
A 33% solution of hydrogen peroxide would burn holes in you.

Without specifying how dilute the original H2O2 solution is, there's no way of knowing how much to dilute it.

Whenever I get them I put a miniscule amount of tea tree oil on it dissolved in facecream (5-10% strength). I do this once and it goes away. I think there's bacteria there that the tea tree oil kills.

n.b. tea tree oil is technically poisonous by oral routes, but it's roughly as poisonous as alcohol, so I doubt it's doing me much harm. It probably also has weak hormonal effects, so I wouldn't make a habit of it, nor would I do it if I was potentially pregnant.

It seems that a lot of people get them from stress. Removing any ongoing stressful situations is a good preventative measure
