I keep on meaning to ask this but always forget ..until now !
Why is that when I take a bag or a sealed package containing meat or chicken out of the freezer to defrost...that somehow...despite the packaging being sealed..there is always some of the meat juices on the outside !! [?]
Last night I took a bag of chuck steak (stewing steak) our of the freezer. I purchased it from my local butcher...saw him place it neatly into a bag and then wrapped it up !!
Now, despite it still being wrapped...there is meat juices on the outside !!..this puzzles me every time...

yep plastic bags which are designed to be waterproof are waterproof provided the seal at the open end is good enuf.
Maybe when the butcher places the meat in the bag his hands transfer some of the meats jucies onto the outside.

Thanks for the answer Michael...I suppose that is a possibility..but what about my frozen mincemeat from Sainsburys...or frozen chicken breasts (oooh breasts..oooh !!)....?
They all seem to ooze juice when defrozen !
*le sigh*...could I be mistaking the liquid for something else then ?

I have experienced this sometimes too.
So, I always just place it on a plate to catch all the drops.
Never really wondered about it though.
My head is not what it used to be.

They usually seem sloppy and meaty though as if it leaks I do recll that .

good quality plasic bags should be water proof, remember for ex taking the goldfish home in a clear plasic bag from the pet shop fair when you were a kid ?
i suspect you are just placing the meat wrapped in its original bag into your freezer. the freezing/defreezing process will change the size and shape of the meat somewhat and this streching can weaken the bag, plus the freezing will make the plastic more brittle. if you do this to a lower quality food grade plastic bag it probably will cause a few micro tears etc.. try freezing the meat in a purpose made freezer bag, and see if the same happens, i suspect it wont leak anymore.
then again, you might just have a gremlin at home that sneaks into your freezer at night and rips the bags a little just to drive you mad.

How do you know the meat juices are from the inside at all?
When one takes something out of the freezer, you would expect the cold item to condense water from the atmosphere. If there was some traces of dried blood on the outside of the package, it could be that the condensate would moisten this dried blood.

It is because they use cheap, thin plastic. Get one of those "bags for life" and fill it with water, and another standard bag...the cheap one will start letting water through a lot quicker than the other.

I do that a lot. It is interesting to see what the quests are reading and there are some great old topics out there that can be carried on and extrapolated from like the branches of a tree or a web or LOL Shall I go on! lol

Water's a tricky substance; it tends to get everywhere. If you want really waterproof, you have to go to a lot more trouble than a 'plastic bag'.
Potato crisps are stored in very sophisticated bags which include PTFE . They go 'off' very quickly in ordinary poly bags.

You are right, Andrew. But the crappy plastic bag/wrapper a chicken or other frozen bird comes in, are not really designed to hold the water, blood, gunge for any lenght of time.
This is why they use cheap plastic.

They are designed to get blood over the bags of flour in your shopping trolley.

I'm tempted to say no they are not waterproof 'cause they put airholes in them, but you're not talking about that type of bag.
I think all of the suggestions made can account for it. Condensation, poor quality plastic, possibly frozen stuff melting, also possibly other things in your fridge dripping on to it? Just a thought.

You Know something interesting I have never had that problem with vacuum sealed bags. They are heavy duty plastic and heat sealed!

On a similar theme, I have recently noticed moisture inside an airtight plastic storage box in my fridge.

If you roast or cook anything in your microwave using a plastic bag specially
made for this cooking purposes then you'll get condensation, steam and the water
will run out of the bag after you have finished doing so.

Also, evaporation occurs, even at low temperatures.
