The energy of the gravitational field is a tiny fraction of the energy of the source mass. This is always directly proportional due to the inverse square nature of the force of gravity.
The mass that generates the gravitational field is itself made up of particles of varying mass. Both elementary and composite in nature. How then does this direct relationship work? Do both electrons and nucleons generate a gravitational field? How can the same proportion of an electrons mass as that of a nucleons generate this field. The masses are so much different. Is it only the constituent quarks that should be considered along with the electrons?

We can look at this a different way. Considering a force carrier acting with a whole atom. Does this work? Well not really. Since atoms vary in size then the number of force carriers interacting with an atom would depend upon the size of the atom. This would be necessary to maintain the proportional relationship.

Could it be that during spontaneous symmetry breaking the Higgs field not only produces mass but a ripple in the gravitational field. This then is a cyclic process which does not require energy loss from the source mass. This of course does not apply to kinetic energy only rest energy.

This could also explain the generation of gravitational waves due to acceleration.
