Title: Why do spiders face down in their webs?
Post by: Jeffrey Schuh on 28/10/2009 11:30:04
Jeffrey Schuh  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi,
I discovered your show (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/) a couple months ago, and am trying to catch up with your archived shows (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/).  Are you folks really naked?  It's hard to tell on the radio.

Anyway, I have a question about spiders.  As far as I have noticed, most, if not all orb spiders that I've seen face downwards when in their web waiting for prey.  Is there a known reason for this?

And, have you ever hummed at a spider?

What do you think?

No, I can't say as I have ever hummed or serenaded any insect, arachnid, mollusc's etc. Can I ask why you make this strange enquiry? Have you?
