Title: Are you Republican or democrat?
Post by: paul.fr on 10/10/2008 12:00:09
How disappointed I am that nobody has discussed the impending US Presidential election. Personally I like McCain, and Palin is hot enough to get my vote..although I have always like the cut of Bidens jib.

So are you a Republican or a democrat?

History 101

For those that don't know about history ... Here is a condensed version:

Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.

The two most important events in all of history were the invention of beer and the invention of the wheel. The wheel was invented to get man to the beer. These were the foundation of modern civilization and together were the catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups:

1. Liberals, and
2. Conservatives.

Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet, so while our early humans were sitting around waiting for them to be invented, they just stayed close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.

Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to B-B-Q at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is known as the Conservative movement.

Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly B-B-Q's and doing the sewing, fetching, and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the Liberal movement.

Some of these liberal men eventually evolved into women. The rest became known as girlie-men. Some noteworthy liberal achievements include the domestication of cats, the invention of group therapy, group hugs, and the concept of Democratic voting to decide how to divide the meat and beer that conservatives provided.

Over the years conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most powerful land animal on earth, the elephant. Liberals are symbolized by the jackass.

Modern liberals like imported beer (with lime added), but most prefer white wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are standard liberal fare. Another interesting evolutionary side note: most of their women have higher testosterone levels than their men. Most social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, dreamers in Hollywood and group therapists are liberals. Liberals invented the designated hitter rule because it wasn't fair to make the pitcher also bat.

Conservatives drink domestic beer, mostly Bud. They eat red meat and still provide for their women. Conservatives are big-game hunters, rodeo cowboys, lumberjacks, construction workers, firemen, medical doctors, police officers, corporate executives, athletes, members of the military, airline pilots and generally anyone who works productively. Conservatives who own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living.

Liberals produce little or nothing. They like to govern the producers and decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained in Europe when conservatives were coming to America . They crept in after the Wild West was tamed and created a business of trying to get more for nothing.

Here ends today's lesson in world history:

It should be noted that a Liberal may have a momentary urge to angrily respond to the above before forwarding it.

A Conservative will simply laugh and be so convinced of the absolute truth of this history that it will be forwarded immediately to other true believers and to more liberals just to tick them off.

I couldn't bring myself to vote for anyone that believes that the world was made in 6 days......I know it's a logical phalacy, and ones religious beliefs do not necessarily impinge on the political arena, but if it castrates science as this appears to, I am happy in my conscience to not vote for them.

Palin scares the living daylights out of me ?

How can someone come out of obscurity to be potentially a heart beat away from being the president. She's a war mongering gun toting creationist who believed the world was created 6000 years ago.

I'd still ' do her ' though !  [;)]

I am a democrat... was a Hillary supporter.
she would have been my vote..
I see a lot of good in obama, but I also see a problem with his back and fourth behaviors on certain issues... so I am in a quandry.. No way on mc cain or Palin...
I think that  i am completely unsure as to where my vote will go as of yet...but not republican...I need more history on Obama...

Hi there all.

I am very scared of Palin as well. McCain's cancer is a constant worry as it has reoccurred too many times. And it is the extremely serious version of skin cancer, not the easily cured version.

Palin's remarks are so radically conservative across the board that she, if president, would bring back the Alien and Sedition Acts of the 1798, allowing the government to throw people in jail for raising a dissenting voice.

Neil - I wouldn't "do her" - no way, no how. She would insist on being on top and would be yelling "stoke, stoke" through the whole act. I am not a racing scull.

One last thought -

THANKS FOR THE CREDIT ON THIS SUBJECT, PAUL !!!

What scares me is that McCain is a robot! Look at those Barbie arms (they only move from the shoulder, not the elbow)!

And he needs an upgrade on his diction circuits:
I've often compared him to the beaver on Lady & The Tramp, and then I found this video! Too funny.

I think that a lot of us here in Europe (myself included) are quite a long way to the left of either choice available in the US.
BTW, one of the magazines (private eye) in the UK published a picture of Palin and pointed out that her hair and features are not aparently disturbed by her glasses.
It wasn't this picture, but this also shows the same lack of effect.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,288722,00.html
Her profile on the left of the picture and the line of her eye are not distorted by the spectacles. The most likely explanation I can think of is that she doesn't really need glasses and the ones she wears are plain glass.
Has anyone any pictures that show anything different?

....drifting off topic for a minute.

My daughter is 20, so this will be her first time voting in a presidential election.  We've been having lots of conversations on the differences between being republican and democrat, the candidates, etc....  The poor girl is extremely confused.

This morning she and I were wathcing "Man of the Year" and Tina Fey had a small role in the movie.  I said "look Ashley, it's Sarah Palin."  She said "Oh WOW!  I didn't know she was an actress too!"

This is what paying college tuition for 3 years gets me!  I'm sooooo proud.

While I appreciate that religious beliefs should not be part of this particular debate, it worries me greatly that the American public would consider putting someone who believes in a 6000 year old Earth that close to running the country - to me, it clearly shows that she is not capable of researching or verifying facts.  She was told Earth is 6000 years old, so that's what she thinks is the truth -  no research, no evidence, no verifying the facts, no checking with other sources - do you want someone like that as VP?

I am liberal on most social issues and conservative on fiscal issues, and though I clicked republican, I tend to be more libertarian.

The horror...the horror.

Unsuspecting Americans were treated to a picture of Sarah Palin on the cover of Newsweek and her picture hadn't been retouched. [:0]

There was evidence of an unwanted whisker, some wrinkling and 'un-extracted pores'. [:I]

The Republicans were the most indignant, apparently. They clearly didn't want their favourite serial moose-killer to actually look the way she did; that would be an unvarnished truth - not welcome in politics!

Walter Cronkite: Do you have a question for the President?

Peter (on phone): Uh.. I, uh.. I took some acid.. I'm afraid to leave my apartment, and I can't wear any clothes.. and the ceiling is dripping, and uh.. I, uh..

Walter Cronkite: Well, thank you very much for calling, sir..

President Jimmy Carter: Just a minute, Walter, this guy's in trouble. I think I better try to talk him down. Peter?

Peter (on phone): Yeah..?

President Jimmy Carter: Peter, what did the acid look like?

Peter (on phone): They were these little orange pills.

President Jimmy Carter: Were they barrel shaped?

Peter (on phone): Uh.. yes.

President Jimmy Carter: Okay, right, you did some orange sunshine, Peter.

Peter (on phone): Very good of you to know that, sir.

President Jimmy Carter: How long ago did you take it, Peter?

Peter (on phone): Uh.. I don't know. I can't read my watch.

President Jimmy Carter: Alright, Peter, just listen. Everything is going to be fine. You're very high right now. You will probably be that way for about five more hours. Try taking some vitamin B complex, vitamin C complex.. if you have a beer, go ahead and drink it..

Peter (on phone): Okay..

President Jimmy Carter: Just remember you're a living organism on this planet, and you're very safe. You've just taken a heavy drug. Relax, stay inside and listen to some music, Okay? Do you have any Allman Brothers?

Peter (on phone): Yes, I do, sir. Everything is okay, huh Jimmy?

President Jimmy Carter: It sure is, Peter. You know, I'm against drug use myself, but I'm not going to lay that on you right now. Just mellow out the best you can, okay?

Peter (on phone): Okay..!

President Jimmy Carter: Okay.

Gender cannot protect one from the vicissitudes of saliva. It is a scientific fact, said by at least one scientist, that women droll for may other reasons than just chocolate. Reasons such as hand bags, shoes, the tushes of certain men, including sailors on shore-leave, The list is endless, containg items ranging from the mundane - toiletries with "pretty" olfactory emanations to men with huge ... yachts and other personal items, some items being QUITE personal.

The fact the the person who is saying she doesn't droll has a hare-lip should warn against believing everything you read. (Pardon me, the politically correct term is lagomorph-lip.)

I think this whole Presidential election business has been manipulated from long before the candidate selection process because of the financial turmoil which has engulfed the US and the rest of the world. All the financial sector and politicians could see it coming sooner or later. For the Republicans it has come a bit too soon for their liking.

Because the financial meltdown has come about during the time when the Republicans were in power with George WWW Bush.com at the helm, and with tough times ahead, they really don’t want to have a Republican President over the next few years. The harsh steps which the next President will have to take to get the US economy back on it’s feet would make life hell for the republicans as it is ‘all their fault’ in the first place. Whereas handing over to the democrats will mean the republicans can blame them for the cost to Middle America, saying ‘we would have done something far less damaging to the taxpayer’. If things don’t work out too well, it will be the democrats fault.

For this reason the republicans have put up a candidate who really is a no-hopper. Whenever I see McCain on the news, I look for the strings. He looks like a puppet and appears to be at a loss as to where he is, where he’s going and why. There was no real high-profile campaign to decide who the republican candidate would be. This effectively left Americans flooded with the democrat’s campaign and kept the topic of discussion centered on the democrats. Palin was the final nail in the republican’s coffin lid. She is a ‘stooge’ put in place to ensure failure. She is inexperienced and being set-up as the unacceptable face of party political excess. I do not think McCain chose her as his running mate, he was ‘pushed’ into taking her. He strikes me as being far too ‘old school’ to have picked a female.

As for the democrats’, they too are reluctant to be at the helm over the next few years for the same reasons as the republicans. But they, at least, can blame the harsh measures which need be taken on the previous administration. The campaign between Clinton (woman) and Obama (black) ensured the highest possible profile, leaving the republicans out of the scene. By choosing these two, they may also have deliberately given themselves a good get-out clause with which to defend themselves in the event of failure to right the US economy. “America was not ready for a black/woman president”. Obama’s victory over Clinton, I think has pleased the democrats, since it gives them the lead ticket on the non-racist stance at the same time as giving them the “not ready for a black President” excuse for failure. They are on a win/win ticket.

Incidentally, I was shocked and dismayed to see a web site (which I will not give credence to by posting a link here) referring to the Bradley effect as “the coon affect” and accusing some media of “coonifying” black candidates. Such talk does nothing to allay the problems of inter-racial tension, but rather highlights the problems and helps cause it’s continuance.

To the author: Black you may be sir; gay you may be sir (although why you point this out I do not know); but you do nothing but damage to your alleged cause. Let those who seek to spread disparaging remarks on racial issues stew in their own misguided views. Do not do them the justice of attention to their rantings.

I was also somewhat perturbed by some American interviewees on last night’s news who said they didn’t want a Muslim President??? I think they are having some difficulty coming to terms with Obama’s middle name.

Obama is, of course, not black. He is of mixed race. But he will be deemed to be black because of his skin colour. If he succeeds in the restoration of the US economy, leads the US back to prosperity and regains America’s world position (oh, and keeps the American people happy into the bargain) he will take his place at the top of the anti-racial charts, above Martin Luther King, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela and go down in history alongside Washington & Lincoln as one of America’s greatest Presidents.

I think Obama will win, despite the fears of the Bradley effect taking it’s toll on his votes. But he will have a steeper uphill struggle to win the confidence of all the American people than Lincoln had after the civil war.

Is America ready for a black President? Only time will tell.

Stay out of the theatre and open top cars’..... Watch your back, Barack!

It hurts me to post this but I was deeply saddened to hear from an American friend of ours who was staying recently that it was, in her words, "inevitable that Obama will be assassinated". This was what she thought but naturally didn't endorse.
With legalised gun ownership as well as historically deeply-held beliefs/prejudices plus at least, I believe, three precedents it seems as if this is not impossible. This articulate man points the way forwards in what is now a global, multicultural world - something I've seen develop in my lifetime.

Sadly I think 'President' Obama's assassination is a distinct possibility. It will be a white assassin and will result in unthinkable race riots.

If he wins, as I suspect he will, the American secret service will have to be at it's most vigilant to protect him and thereby the peace and stability of the union.

God (pardon the term) help America if they fail.

On MPR at the start of the campaigns this was the one thing all blacks were afraid of, many saying they would not vote for Obama because they believed he would be assassinated.

Palin scares the living daylights out of me ?

How can someone come out of obscurity to be potentially a heart beat away from being the president. She's a war mongering gun toting creationist who believed the world was created 6000 years ago.

I'd still ' do her ' though !  [;)]

I second that emotion.

As an American, living in the south, and still witnessing racism at it's worst, I too am afraid that if Obama is elected he will be assasinated.  I pray we're all wrong.

This articulate man points the way forwards in what is now a global, multicultural world - something I've seen develop in my lifetime.

Im not sure that Obama points the way foreward, or in any direction really.  There is little to judge him on.  All we in the US have are his words and the meager record he has left behind as he used his first terms in office to run for the next highest office.

He may be a very decent person, and possibly even a great leader, but it would be folly to trust the oratory of ANY politician seeking such a high office without something substantial to back it up in his record.

That being said, McCain does have a record...and it mostly sucks aside from taxation/spending issues (the glaring exception being the market bailout turd).  I havent even voted yet because there is no one worth standing in line 45 minutes for.  Oh well.

Obama will likely win, and there will very possibly be an attempt on his life.  The ramifications of this would be unthinkable and horrendous.  Legalized gun ownership would have little to do with it...if someone willing to kill a president wants a gun, they will get it...illegal or not.

As for the democrats’, they too are reluctant to be at the helm over the next few years for the same reasons as the republicans.

I strongly disagree.  Democrats are licking their chops to get into power, and I dont mean this in a derogatory way.  They have been out of favor with Americans since the 1980's (after the last huge economic crash) after sweeping Washington for most of the 50 years before.  They feel that it is their time.  The fact that Obama needed a stock market collapse to propel him forward in the polls when Congressional Democrats are favored by historically large margins across the country speaks just as loudly as McCains inability to defeat a far left (by American standards) first term state/national Senator.

Some people try to draw parallels between Obama and President Kennedy, but, for the most part, Kennedy was far more conservative than both McCain or Obama.  Reagan, nor Bush, were the first in the 20th century to extol the virtues of supply-side economics...Kennedy was (well, actually it was Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon in the 1920s, but whos counting), and it was Kennedy (and Khrushchev) who brought us closer to nuclear war than any other world leader(s) (not to mention entanglement in Vietnam).

Youtube up McCain on Saturday Night Live.
A QVC infomercial, Palin going rouge, it had a weird feel to it.

Barry (as his family call him) is a big boy. I'm sure he realises the risks of being President. Black or white or Kennedy; all Presidents live with the real fear of being knocked off. It is worse than medievil times when children of the King would poison each other in order to take the throne. I guess all the best leaders of America end up being murdered so if Barry is any good I'm sure someone will try. You can't be a good leader without upsetting nutters.

Can you tell ffrethac is a Republican? And that it was the "Tax reform" Measure of the first President Bush that shut down the Economy, especially the oil business, as I was one of the 255,000 oil and gas professionals - geologists and engineers - the complete guts of the industry- that last their jobs during the REPUBLICAN caused freefall the economy wen through - It was done to eliminate the smaller companies so that larger companies - not just oil companies but all industries - could become the only players.

And I agree, some nuttter like frethac will probably put a bullet in Barry's brain if elected.

Nice try Jim  [;)] You more than anyone should know that I have no loyalty to any political party.

As for Bush 41...he is a weenie who deserved to be defeated on his reelection bid.  Reagan he is/was not.  My first presidential election ('96) I voted for Clinton, the man who trounced him (though I voted R is the congressionals two years before).  Dole (speaking of religious nutters) wasnt much better than Bush 41.

The last that I remember, both houses of Congress were controlled by Democrats with very good majorities.  The Executive branch may submit the budget, but its the Legislative branch that changes it and passes it.  Both parties own responsibility for that turd as well.

This right wing, gun toting, fascist nutter has a large amount of respect for a certain left wing, flag burning, commie ex-hippie.  Hows that for bipartisanship?  [;D]
