Title: What is the Lamb shift?
Post by: DeeDee on 28/06/2015 11:54:11
I have been reading some of the replies to this post and I notice that all of them favour the old and outmoded explanations with their convoluted and complicated  histories, while completely ignoring the Lamb Shift  (http://" http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/quantum/lamb.html”)  which in effect gives a neo-classical interpretation to the same phenomena. The electron’s do not spiral into the nucleus because they are constantly emitting and absorbing virtual photons, thereby maintaining their momentum.  This is a phenomenon that has been both observed and proven through experiment.

Welcome to the forum. I think you mean that you've been reading some of the replies to this thread, correct?

That is quite incorrect. We've been explaining that electrons don't fall into the nucleus because electrons don't behave in a way that is consistent with classical mechanics but in a way that is consistent with quantum mechanics wherein electrons don't move about the nucleus the same way a planet orbits a planet. They exist in what's called orbitals which is just a fancy term of certain quantum mechanical states.

That is incorrect. That is not what the Lamb shift is. The Lamb shift is a small difference in energy between two energy levels 2S1/2 and 2P1/2  of the hydrogen atom in quantum electrodynamics.

That is quite incorrect. Where did you ever get the idea that this is how the quantum mechanics of the hydrogen atom works?

The phenomenon has most certainly been observed for certain. It manifests itself in a shift in energy levels.

Read about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamb_shift

I should have perhaps added that this is not a QM explanation,  rather it is a neo-classical physics explanation, deduced from the fact that electrons around a nucleus are constantly emitting and absorbing virtual photons.  I am sorry the original link I had posted does not seem to work Try the link below to the hyper physics web-site, where I think you will be convinced that such virtual interactions are an integral part of modern physics and as such not the purview of only Quantum Mechanics. I hope you will agree that any fact proven by empirical evidence is preferable to conjecture or hypothetical reasoning.

Then it belongs in the New Theories section, not here.

The link you gave in no way supports what you believe it does.

I have read the link you gave and looked at a few others. I must confess that I don't see them supporting any 'fact' that you claim.
Yes, the Lamb Shift has been "observed and proven through experiment", but it does not prove your theory. In fact it appears to me that it gives support to quantum electrodynamics, which is what was being discussed in the main thread from which this one originated.
