I work in the exhibitions industry, many years ago when Culture Club was all the rage, I was working on the World Travel Market at Earls Court. Madame Tussuad's was exhibiting at the show and had a wax work model of Boy George on their stand. Everything was closed up at 10 pm the night before the show opened. By the morning the head of Boy George had gone missing.

Was it a fan who nicked it? Or was it someone who hated him, stuck a wick in it and set light to it?

Nope! Hi Paul..Just thought I would share..Some of the figures were outstanding..Although the lighting there was darker and set to where it was really hard to tell they were wax...    my flash made them look less realistic.. i wonder if I backed off if it would flood them out less?

Better to bounce the flash or use a diffuser.

A diffuser??
How does one bounce the flash? I am not a camera person.. LOL
Title: Re: Have you ever been to the wax Museum In San Francisco?
Post by: Don_1 on 18/09/2008 12:49:47
Bounced flash can only be done with an off camera flash gun. The flash is pointed at a white ceiling, wall or piece of card (or purpose made brolly) in the direction of the subject roughly mid-way between the flash unit and the subject. The bounced light is softer than direct illumination.
[diagram=366_0] Here Green is the camera, red the flash unit, yellow the flash beam.

So far as I am aware there are no diffusers available for cameras with built-in flash, but you can use some low tactile opalescent tape over the flash lens. If your camera is an auto exposure/flash, it should make the necessary compensation. Again, this diffused light is softer.

Karen thanks for the photos but I think that the last one might be of John Singer Sargent's portrait of his mothe.

I could be wrong and I've never been there.

Wasn't it whistlers mother?

I never knew cleopatra was crosseyed. She looks like she is taking it up the ass's milk!

Apparently, the Madame Tussaudes model of Kyle Manogue (can't spell) had to have a new bottom because everyone was rubbing it. In the 80's Mrs Thatcher had the largest number of visitors taking photos of her model with someone sticking the v sign up at it.

I like the idea that when you are no longer famous you get melted down and turned into someone else. What an insult. I'd hate to be turned into a star I hated.

In some cases when a person dies the model is replaced with a younger version..  E:G Churchill..When alive the model is more or less how the person is at the time.  After death they bring out the old moulds so you see Churchill in his heyday during the Second World War.   Some of Madam Tussauds are pretty life like..e.g Blair but others are not so good.  I haven't been for years.

There is also..

I thought the Vegas version of Cameron Diaz was very realistic.

I think the female movie-star waxworks look more like "the real thing" because they both have painted faces,
(i.e. male movie-stars wear less make up than their females counterparts.)

I've been to the wax museum in San Francisco. It's awesome and these pictures display it well. I consider it nicer than the LA one. Great pictures by the way!

Pele* apparently has been stored too close to a radiator. [:)]

[ * allegedly. Looks more like Muhammad Ali (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Ali) to me]

I think it is Whacko himself. It's actually not a bad likeness, from what can be seen. But Ken Dodd is only given away by the hair, his teeth need some attention, to say the least.

The only other one I can make out is Telly (Who luv's ya baby) and maybe that's Sid James or Frank Bough on the far left.

If that's supposed to be Steve McQueen to Ked Dodd's right, I'm not surprised he died, he looks dreadfully ill there.

I had your Steve McQueen down as Jack Nicolson, (but neither have a cleft / dimpled chin like waxwork #3). I don't think Steve / Jack is supposed to be that colour, looks like he's bloomed like a chocolate bar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate_bloom) that's past it's best-before date.

These are only guesses ...

1. Kojak (Telly Savalas)
2. Doddy
3. Jack Nicolson-ish / Jimmy Greaves (in 1960s)
4. Ali / Pele
5. Prince Charles
6. George Best (deffo)
7. Cliff Richard / A young Prince Andrew
8. Silvio Berlosconi’s implanted hairline  :¬)
9. Sid James / Yitzhak Rabin (in the 1970's)
10. Jimmy Edwards
