Title: Did Michael Faraday discover that light is form of EM radiation?
Post by: ScientificBoysClub on 08/07/2009 13:51:54
How on earth michael faraday discovered that light is form of Electromagnetic radiation ?
Before Maxwell proved it ?

"How on earth michael faraday discovered that light is form of Electromagnetic radiation ?"
I wasn't aware that he had.

yes, He did before Maxwell did  .. Maxwell  and Faraday are friends !!

I wasn't aware that he had.

Faraday was not cool in math so Maxwell helped him out and proved it was correct that light is of the form  of EM radiation ..!!

I don't think Faraday did.  He proposed that fields can exist outside of a body and changes in those fields do not propagate instantaneously.  He made no link to light as far as I know.

Faraday used a magnetic field to rotate the polarization of a beam of light in 1857.
This led him to conjecture that light was related to electromagnetism.

I saw this cool BBC documentary "Scotland's Einstein: James Clerk Maxwell - The Man Who Changed the World" few days ago, and as far I remember, Maxwell was good in math while his colleague and friend Faraday was an expert to EM. Maxwell accomplished to describe Faraday’s findings mathematically ending up with his famous set of equations. And when Maxwell tried to use his equations to calculate the speed of an EM wave, he found that the resulted speed was close to the (already measure at that time) speed of light. Consequently, he claimed (mathematically of course) that light is an EM.

How on earth michael faraday discovered that light is form of Electromagnetic radiation ?
Before Max Well proved it ?
He did not.
The idea itself fell out of maxwell's equations and nobody had expected it to be so.

As Space Flow[/\i] said, he didn't.

Note: It's best not to use the term prove in any discussion in physics. Any good physicist will tell you that The science of physics is not about "proving" anything. In fact it was Alan Guth who I'm quoting here.

You're quite correct. It's all explained here by NASA: http://www-spof.gsfc.nasa.gov/Education/wemwaves.html

Faraday didn't discover electromagnetic radiation (aka electromagnetic waves). That was done by Maxwell, at least theoretically. It was Maxwell who showed that light was an electromagnetic wave.

Now, here's the tricky part. Maxwell theorized the existence of EM waves but it was Hertz who discovered them experimentally! See: http://science.hq.nasa.gov/kids/imagers/ems/consider.html
