What is the relationship between mass and the gravitational field?
An object such as a proton has mass. It also has a gravitational field. The Earth has a large mass and a more powerful gravitational field. We see the Earth but we do not see the gravitational field. The mass exists where it is but the gravitational field keeps expanding outward into space.
The field of the Earth itself is billions of years old while the universe is around 13.78billion years since big bang. At the big bang the size of the universe was very small but now it is huge. Thus the gravitational field was tiny at big bang but now is huge.
As we look for an oscillating universe, it appears possible that prior to the big bang we had a gravitational field which compressed into mass. Therefore one possibility is that mass is a concentrated gravitational field. Over time the physical universe radiates mass and the gravitational field stretches out toward infinity. In effect the gravitational field is external mass and mass is a concentrated gravitational field. What does present theory suggest?
