To determine whether an egg is fresh, immerse it in a pan of cool, salted water. If it sinks, it is fresh, but if it rises to the surface, throw it away.
Does it work, and if so how?

Yes it does....Everything shifts in the middle of the egg to balance out the weight of the egg....this is just a guess as I have used this method for a while if I have had eggs I wasn't sure of after purchasing from the store....I think the egg yolk will shift back and forth as it is very fluid and that is why it sinks...

My Gran used to hold it on the palm of her hand if it rocked or sat a certain way it was bad so I am sure low is right about the balance as I know that is what she did too. She would also put them in a cup of water, to check the way they floated which is similar to yours, I don't remember the outcome results were, as to what indicated what! That is interesting..HUH

Your Gran sounded like a pretty good ole gal...I know you have talked about her before...that is a pretty fond memory...if you find anything you remember she messed with when you post the pic, put the story along with it...it will be a fun read..hehe

My Grandma was a bright star in my life.. and she was indeed interesting.. to say the least! You should have seen her house.. She had two huge rooms about 20 by 12 ft wide.. She had them filled with shelves every square inch of the walls. On the shelves she had organized and I kid you not.. Every thing that ever came into her possession in her life.. no joke.. example 1. She had clothing that had worn out, so she would spend hours un sewing the seams, one sticth at atime and rewinding the thread back onto her old wooden thread spools which she and her previos decenents recycled.. Every button was saved and put on a thread rope to keep them together. I still have the buttons.!!! Then she would wash and fold the remaining fabric which she used to make us children clothing. She also taught us to make our own doll clothing learning to hand stich first and then embroidery then crochet etc, Then we learned to sew on the machine, I own about six sewing machines at last count..LOL She saved old divided aluminum tv dinner trays that we all ate from, hundreds and hundreds of them. she saved twist ties boxes and boxes of them. we saved aluminum foil which we washed and stacked in drawers for reuse until it was determined it was no longer usable then it was added to a very large aluminum foil ball which we started and eventually had to take a part to get it out her door.. to go to the recycling center. When we reassebled it, we rolled it up the road about 8 blocks or so to a little shopping center who had set up a pay station for aluminum.. It was quite the sit to see this ball of foil being pushed up the road.. It took all of us kids to move it as it had become so heavy.. I kid you not it wasa good six feet tall and six ft wide.. I cannot remember how much it weighed, they were so shocked to see it they tried to tell her that they would not accept it.. that was a big no no!! She won with the help of the county Sheriff which made them pay her for her aluminum.. LOL!!!It was so funny lookiing back now, but at the time she was one hot old hunched back granny who was about to eat those folks alive at the recycling center as she and us had been saving all that foil for the war effort.. and to help keep america beautiful...LOL This was around 1967 or so.. It was quite a memory... so when I say she saved everything, I mean everything,,short of the paper we wiped our bottoms with, and if she could have saved that , I think she would have...LOL
