Title: Do you need to have intercourse to become pregnant?
Post by: Sam on 09/10/2009 14:30:03
Sam asked the Naked Scientists:

Dear sir,

I would like to know whether is there any possibility of pregnancy if a male ejaculates outside the female's body but the female uses fingers to put the sperm in her vagina?

What do you think?

I wouldn't say "most definitely yes", it's so frightening. Conception is not that simple.

Yes there is a possibility, but I think if it happened only once chances are really slim that the girl will get pregnant. It's more likely if it's done deliberately several times... It's usual for a couple that wants a child to try for 2-3 months before a successful conception even when they do it the reliable old fashioned way (sexual intercourse).

The male and female body is designed in a way that the easiest way of conception is through making love (and not putting sperm in the vagina by hand). The penis and ejaculation puts the sperm right where it belongs to, and then the cervix sucks it up (see the video of the cervix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVw0Ikj6YPc) during the female orgasm).

ART utilise the 'turkey baster' method but under clinical conditions. Using fingers (while not impossible) is creating more hurdles for the process. There are issues with motility and environment and hygiene.

So, while not impossible, highly unlikely to get pregnant using this method.
