Following on from BenV's thread about earwax candles, what exactly is earwax? How does it form?

i believe its just a mixture of dead skin cells and maybe a little bit of sweat that builds up in your ears because it has no where else to go.
could be wrong though.

I think earwax serves a purpose and is secreted.
I'm sure I remember reading that it has an acrid taste and can be poisonous to insects so helps defend the ear.
