Dear Ocular Implant Specialists,
This is a retina scanner:
[ Invalid Attachment ]
Pretty nifty piece of equipment eh ?
I understand these things scan your eye with a laser !...over prolonged use are these things safe ?...can they damage the eyes ?.....are there others that use differing technologies, different sources of light ?

Does this help? it talks about retina scanners. They may cause cataracts and glaucoma apparently...

"They may cause cataracts and glaucoma apparently"
Says who?
My guess is that they are "safe" (as far as anything ever is).
How useful they are is another question.

No, under the subheading "Disadvantages" (of the technology), the page says
"Vulnerability to diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma"
My interpretation is that this is merely stating that the reliability of the retina scanning and identifying technology itself worsens or becomes unusable if the subject is suffering from cataracts or glaucoma.
In the case of cataracts, the lens of the eye goes foggy and opaque (it crystallises) which is fairly obviously going to make imaging anything (like the retina) through it tricky...

Optical equipment is so sensitive that you would only need very low levels of light. Harmless- except for the risk of conjunctivitis if you touch it.
