Every single time that I'm at the keyboard the cat gets affectionate and wants to cuddle. Every single time, no matter what. She could be dismissive all day long but as soon as I get on the keyboard she wants attention. Why?

Jealousy?

Could also be pure inquisitiveness, or curiosity as some put it.

Ooo, Ooo, Ooo. ..... I was sooo tempted to write something along similar lines, but my PC alarm meter went crazy, I was so sure I would be flamed!

Just in case I need to cover my backside and hide from the PC Police, I was referring to a female cat.
I have a sneaking suspicion that might not be good enough for some of the fairer members here at TNS.
Oh well, what the hell, if it weren't that statement getting me in trouble, it would just be something else I've dared to say.

Sorry, we seem to have hijacked your thread. Getting back to your original post:
When I was small we had a cat and one memory has remained very vividly. We had a set of encyclopaedias, very precious. I still have them including a page showing an Anaconda, but covered in muddy paw prints. I think I was reading and using my finger to follow the words, maybe that attracted the cat to investigate?
Experiment: wait until cat is ignoring you and begin to poke an object in the room. You might also try poking an object while not paying it attention to isolate the poking action. Not easy to design an experiment and eliminate any confounding factors.
On the other hand, being interested in birds, she might be ....wait for it ..... looking for the Tweet!

Try replacing the mouse with a trackball!
Seriously, it's possible that she is attracted by the clicking, or your moving fingers look like live prey, or, as you are sitting down, your lap becomes a stable warm platform. Cats are particularly good at detecting small temperature changes.

It's not the mouse. She doesn't even acknowledge the mouse's existence. I think I jumped the gun on this though. I'm on the computer and she's ignoring me. False alarm I guess.

My cats do that, too. Not all the time, but sometimes they do seem to demand you stop paying attention to the lap top and focus on them, Maybe it is a kind of jealousy. Before lap tops, it was newspapers my cat insisted on walking in front of or poking its head under. A friend of mine said her cat would caught a bird and left it on her lap top - a kind of present, it would seem.

I saw a Youtube video of someone who had attached a string to the hub of an overhead fan, so the string just reached the ground.
If the cat is bothering you, turn on the fan, at slow speed. The cat won't bother you for a while.
