Title: strange effect.
Post by: ScientificSorcerer on 01/09/2013 07:46:59
Some thing weird happened to me today, something that I must wright down, some thing which is just plain strange.  Like I went in to the twilight zone or something.

I must be clear that this may be my perception which was altered by what I did OR this could be a series of coincidences and a placebo effect.

I did an experiment with sound and light, I made a program which synced up the pitch and volume of the sound of music to the wavelength and amplitude of a computer light display and listened to the music while the computer screen changed color and brightness in rhythmic pulses.

what I mean by that is when the music got louder the screen got brighter and when the sound got higher pitched the light got higher frequency.

like infrasound would represent infrared light and ultra sound would represent ultraviolet light you sync the two different waves to music and as a result you get a screen that fluctuates in brightness and color synced to the sound of the beat.

If you listen to music and look at the screen at the same time something weird happens, I can only discribe it to be like a hypnotic trance but your focus is effected
if you look at the screen wile listening to low pitched slow simple beats you instantly are put into a different state of mind as if making you loose focus and nearly fall asleep, if you listen to loud death metal you somehow have superhuman focus. the effect lasts like 10 minutes after you stop doing this, It distorts your perception like knowledge reveals it self to you more or less.

for example if you listen to a car insurance commercial, chances are you wont pay any attention to it or anything for a brief moment, you look at the screen but your mind is blank, if you listen to calming music and look at the screen your mind instantly goes blank, like the commercial, your perception of that commercial makes you sort of loose your memory of it "sort of" this is what happens when you sync calming music music to light.

on the other hand

listening to loud fast high pitched music wile looking at the screen makes you overly brain hurt over a car insurance commercial and over analyze everything and it seems like time is going by slowly, like if you were super board in a class type of way. words appear to have different or multiple meanings and when a tv talks everything feels unusually observant.

I must know if any of this has ever been observed or if anybody knows wtf is going on in my brain when I do this.

There's an app for that ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_machine

Strobing (flashing) lights can cause hallucinations and and even seizures ...

It is claimed that using a dreamachine allows one to enter a hypnagogic state. This experience may sometimes be quite intense, but to escape from it, one needs only to open one's eyes.
A dreamachine may be dangerous for people with photosensitive epilepsy or other nervous disorders. It is thought that one out of 10,000 adults will experience a seizure while viewing the device; about twice as many children will have a similar ill effect.

allegedly pulsating sound can alter ones mental state ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binaural_beats  [ but there is hard evidence for evidence for light-induced changes in brainwaves : the flashing lights alone could be responsible ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photosensitive_epilepsy]
