HOW DOES WATER TURN INTO STONES?
« on: 17/09/2007 04:55:07 »
I was watching a Discovery program when my medication kicked in and got the best of me! I did not get far enough to discover the rest! Apparently the water travels over the stram bed over the falls and down the vines builing up something over the vines which solidifies into stone, or something..LOL I missed a largest best part of the show!

So can anyone explain how that works??? Please??????

Not sure about the exact context you are talking about (plus I am already almost asleep - well past my bedtime), but all I can think of is that material that the water has picked up upstream, and carried down with it, can get deposited downstream.

could it be minerals from the water building up? rocks are made of minerals right?

Yes, that is what I was thinking, but the minerals have to be picked up from somewhere - you don't get the minerals in rainwater, so the minerals first have to be picked up upstream.

Possibly hard water (carrying calcium or magnesium) depositting these minerals on the vines- due to higher surface area and evaporation.  But as George said, the water had to pick up the minerals upstream.  Like the white deposits around your faucet if you have hard water.  Especially prevelant in areas underlain by limestone, which is easily dissolved by slight acidity of rainwater.

Think stalactite and stalagmite.

OK, Are those Stalactite and stalagmite you mentioned found in caves, as I recall my mom traveling south of us to new Mexico etc and touring through what I thought were stalagmite caves! I think I have pictures. Is that what happens to the vines they turn in to stalagmite?

I know the show opened and they were speaking of water trailing down over a big waterfall with much greenery hanging all around . Trees and plants everywhere very lush area and the roots of many of the plants hung down behind the waterfall and were covered by much algae and mossy looking substance they were describing how water topples down stream and comes down saturating there algae covered roots and vines, causing some sort of build up on the roots and vines. But it said that was part of the process he was further explaining what happened to the water to turn it to stone...LOL Then I fell asleep, it was a very interesting show!

Will try to respond later in detail - busier than a one-armed paper-hanger.
