or quickest way.
up and down in lines, randomly moving the mower from side to side as you go, or around in an ever decreasing circle?

which is quickest, which is best?

around the perimeter first then ride it around until you have reached the center makes a cool pattern. LOL Riding is much faster as push mowing takes me three days about 6 hrs a day to push mow my entire property.. Its a big Job.. So a rider is good! One pass around perimeter with push mower and weed eater then many many passes to finish! LOL  If one started early am like 4:00 am or 3:00am, one could potentially get done in one day by late in the evening.

The rider mower has a nice big headlight so one can DO IT in the dark! LOL

The best and quickest way I have found to mow a lawn is to have someone else do it. They come with there 48 inch wide riding mower and knock it out in minutes. BTW, I am a lazy person.

I would regard Jim's suggestion to be the second quickest - the quickest is with concrete.

My experience with trying to mow lawns quickly (aside from the two suggestions above) has tended towards finishing with non-functional mowers (and on one case a visit to the hospital to stitch up my hand).

or you could just not have grass in your lawn, which would be very plain, unless its like a serious flower field, then you just wouldn't have to mow your lawn at all.

I live near Rothamstead research establishment, which is an agricultural research establishment.  They have regular open days, when the have lectures for the pubic, and sometimes a tour of the establishment.

In one area, they have a patch of ground which they kept untouched for over 100 years (no livestock graze it, and no human hand has touched it).  It used to be grassland, but it has become a wood.  In this country, the main reason for so much grassland is that livestock consume anything that grows tall enough, so no trees get to grow.  Take away the livestock (and the lawnmowers) and it reverts to woodland.

The best way I've found is to buy hubby a shiny new riding lawn mower for his birthday.  Then act completely incompetant, ask him stupid questions about how it works and what you can do on it, making him think you'll do great harm to his new prized possesion.  He'll never let you near it and you'll always have a nicely manicured lawn. ;D

Haha.  My husband pulled that too.  That's where I learned it.
