Fake Glass !!...how do i make it ?
« on: 19/10/2007 14:58:33 »
Dearest Naked Scientist Academias of My awe,

Here is some fake glass...

Nice isn't it ?...notice how ready willing and able it is to be smashed upon my head with no injury to me whatsoever !!

Is there a Kitchen Science way of making this ?.....what IS fake glass ?

I could go with the kids on Halloween and as people open their doors I could greet them by smashing bottles on my kids heads !!..I am sure this would bring a happy festive smile and chortle to all who gaze upon such a happy sight !!

so..how is it made ?....

*please note: this site does NOT condone the smashing of bottles , fake or otherwise upon little cherubs heads....!!little brats maybe !!*

Its candy :) just make a mold of whatever glass object you want to create, then fill it with a mixture of sugar, corn syrup, and water. I'm not sure of the exact ratio, but a friend of mine showed me how. He works special effects for movies and gets to do it quite frequently

Sugar Glass by Rebecca Burt

Make your own break-away glass with this easy sugar recipe

Materials:

Cooking pot
Stove Top
Candy Thermometer
2 c. Water
1 c. White Corn Syrup (Karo)
3 1/2 c. Sugar
1/4 tsp. Cream of Tartar

Steps:

Mix the water, corn syrup, sugar and tartar together in the pot and bring it to a boil on the stove (at about 220 F).

Leave it boiling until it reaches 300 F, which will take about 45 minutes. The mixture should be thick, with almost all the water boiled off.

As soon as it hits 300 F, pour it into whatever mold you're using and let it cool.

Notes:

Sugar glass doesn't last long (warps or goes sticky) so make it close to the time when you plan to use it.

Keep it out of moist areas and direct sun. The same as a lolipop it will melt or go gooey.

The sugar can attract ants and other bugs so keep it packaged in plastic, etc. until you use it.

Though only sugar, the glass can have sharp edges/points when broken, so be careful when handling.

For more information on breakaway glass, molding, and casting of other kinds, we recommend this book:

The Prop Builder's Molding & Casting Handbook
by Thurston James
ISBN 1-55870-128-1
It's an excellent how-to book with lots of pictures and it's cheap, only $20 US.

Thanks!  ;D
I'm not very good at US or imperial measurements.
1 cup for you is (apparently) 0.2362 litres for me

I get that, I'm Canadian and we use the weirdest mixture between the two types of measurement. I weigh myself in pounds but buy things by the kg. I cook using Fahrenheit but know the temperature outside to be in Celsius.

And yeah a cup here is measured at about 250ml
