Goldfish size in relation to their environment ?
« on: 29/06/2004 02:52:36 »
Did you know that if you take a gold fish out of a gold fish bowl and put it in a bigger tank or a pond , it will double or treble its size ? Now what is that all about ?...There must be something in fishy brain that adjusts growth to fit in with fishys surrounding environment. Are there other creatures with the same ability ?

Hmm, crocodiles can get pretty big when they're not in captivity, i.e. in unrestricted volumes of water.

perhaps they're like cells in culture that are restricted in growth by the volume of medium you put them in, as their secreted waste products become toxic when they build up. perhaps goldfish secrete lots and lots of toxic waste????

I thiought it was just to do with a tendancy for there to be a greater level of food available. I've seen a lot of people and animals get a whole lot bigger when they eat more.

No it's definitely space related Tim, I heard it as a fact, but they didn't explain why though.

That's a myth.  I've grown trout in aquaria that were so big they could barely turn around.  No doubt the myth is perpetuated by backyard ponders who will believe anything they read on the net lol

I have a pond I bought ten little feeder gold fish and they are getting huge in the outside pond.. I never feed them they live off the algae mosquito larva and natural occurring things plants etc...in the pond! They have always become very long big fish now I am talking about !2 x  6 inch fish as they get older! They can get quite large and they become much brighter in color then your run of the mill Goldfish!

Then how do you explain 3 fish in a 4 foot long aquarium and all three fish were a foot and a half long?
